Text Copyright © 2015 Michael Rosen, published by Smokestack Books ‘Don’t Mention the Children’ was written in 2014 by the children’s author, poet and activist Michael Rosen following a @guardian report that the Israeli government had banned a radio advert naming children killed in Gaza. Gaza is now the deadliest place in the world to be a child. Over 20,000 children have been killed by Israeli forces. The actual number is undoubtedly higher. These children had names, and favourite subjects in school. They wanted to be teachers, doctors and astronauts when they grew up – the same as children in the UK and across the world. They were, and still are, someone's everything: their entire universe. We refuse to allow their suffering to become normalised. We must make their voices heard. With Save the Children UK and @chooselove, we called on actors, presenters, activists and influencers to use their voices and platforms to ensure these children can never be erased. The poem was written to expose the silencing of children’s suffering in the face of devastating violence. Since then, the situation for children has only grown worse. Today we remember the Beirut Blast, a horrific explosion in the port of Beirut. It injured more than 7000 people & killed 218. More than 300,000 people were estimated to be displaced. We send our solidarity to our partners and friends who continue to help rebuild.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer responded to the letter we sent, with 400 public figures including @Malala , Jade Thirwall, @Florence_Pugh, @GaryLineker and Benedict Cumberbatch, demanding he end the UK's complicity in the horrors in Gaza. He sent us this reply.

This year, 9 people have already died trying to cross the channel in search of safety. No one should be forced into this position. Politicians cannot keep turning their back on the need for real, compassionate solutions. We need real international leadership and #saferoutes NOW

The reality is that #conflict, persecution and #climatechange are pushing more people to flee their homes in search of safety. For many people seeking safety, there are no safe routes, which forces people into taking dangerous journeys in unsafe boats on treacherous waters.

The France & UK ‘one in one out’ deal shows a shameful lack of humanity. #Refugees and #displaced people aren't numbers to be controlled. Every individual has hopes and dreams, a past, present and future, and we all have the right to be treated with dignity. #ChooseLove
