The Metropolitan Church of St. Demetrios is a Late Byzantine church in the lower town of Mystras.
The new metropolitan church of Mystras was dedicated to St. Demetrios, who was the patron saint of Michael VIII – the emperor who recovered Constantinople in 1261. The following year he also retook control of much of Southern Greece, establishing Mystras as a new center of Byzantine administration.
The first phase of the church likely began soon after the Byzantines took control of the region. Begun by Metropolitan Eugenios, who was buried in the church, it was completed and decorated by Metropolitan Theodosios by the early 1280s.
