If you have no money and no skills, Jan had less than you.
No internet.
No AI.
Just library books and 17 years of patience.
You have YouTube.
You have ChatGPT and AI resources.
You have free resources everywhere.
Even free community.
If you are still stuck, this is how you start.
In 1992 Jan Koum arrived in California from Ukraine at 16. His family lived on food stamps. His mom cleaned houses. Fatforward to 2014, Facebook bought his company WhatsApp for $19 billion.
So what did he do and what you can do in 2026.
Step 1: Learn one skill for free
Jan taught himself coding from library books.
You can do better.
Use YouTube,
freeCodeCamp,
or ChatGPT.
Pick one skill: coding, design, writing, or sales.
Practice 2 hours daily for 6 months. That's it.
Step 2: Get any job in that industry
Jan got hired at Yahoo with no degree because he could do the work.
Build a simple portfolio.
Build content around what you do. Be visible.
Then apply to different opportunities.
Expect rejections. A single yes will change your life.
Your job is your paid education.
Learn while getting paid.
Step 3: Save and watch
Work your job. Save every money you can.
Then watch what's broken in your industry. Nothing bogus.
Jan saw SMS was expensive and unreliable.
He built WhatsApp to fix it.
Find your broken thing.
Step 4: Build small, charge early
Don't quit your job yet.
Build nights and weekends.
Solve one problem for one group of people.
Keep it simple.
Charge from day one.
Stay small.
Step 5: Play the long game
Jan worked 10 years at Yahoo.
Then built WhatsApp for 5 years.
That's 17 years from zero to billionaire.
If you are starting from zero, it is hard and I can't lie to you. Most people quit at year 2 because they're not making headway yet.
Carve a path for yourself.
Keep building.
Don't quit.
Celebrate your small and little wins.
Now go build.
