After scarce progress during the 1969-70 academic year, the group decided to take direct action. On March 2nd, 1970, 17 members of SOBU began an occupation of Lorimer Chapel with a list of 5 non-negotiable demands. The next day, President Strider responded, refusing to cooperate.

1887: Adam Simpson Green becomes the first African-American to graduate from @ColbyCollege. Never afraid to express his opinion, Green often wrote articles for the @ColbyEchoNews about that state of the nation after the Civil War. Green became a teacher. #BlackHistoryMonth

When Sam died on July 1st, 1904, the campus celebrated his life by ringing the college bell 71 times, his age at the time of death. In 2017, @ColbyCollege President David Greene changed the name of the President's House to the Osborne House in honor of Sam. #BlackHistoryMonth

1865: Samuel Osborne arrives in Waterville, Maine after being freed from slavery. Two years later, Sam was hired as @ColbyCollege’s lone janitor and served in the position for 37 years. A beloved member of the college community, he played a role in everyone's lives.

1845: Jonas Holland Townsend is the first African-American to attend @ColbyCollege. Townsend heads west for the California gold rush in 1849 and cofounds the first black newspaper in California, the Mirror of the Times, in 1855 and serves as the head editor from 1856-1858.
