Years of commentary from establishment talking heads have conditioned them to believe that some groups are beneath civil liberties, so the instinctive defence of free speech never kicks in. For law enforcement and the political class, this is ideal. They get to build precedent, normalise the arrest of dissident voices, and stretch the meaning of “menace”, “harass”, or “offend” in a way that only flows in one direction. The public will not defend the target, which makes the expansion of state power smooth and risk free. The uncomfortable truth is that free speech advocates on the right often feel awkward about defending people who sit far outside the mainstream. It is easier to stay silent and hope the line never reaches them. But that instinct is exactly why these cases keep advancing. If the principle of free speech is not defended when the target is unpopular, it will not exist when the target is you. Now is the moment to push back. Not because you endorse the NSN or what they say and think, but because the state is using them as a demo model for new powers. If these powers stand uncontested, they will not be limited to edgy Telegram posts by political outliers. They will drift toward the centre, as they always do, and eventually anyone outside the approved narrative will face the same crushing authoritarianism.
