Last night, a gunman stormed the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and nearly killed the President of the United States. A Secret Service agent was shot - saved only by his bullet-resistant vest. The suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. Our President was rushed from the room. This was not a drill. This was not politics. This was an assassination attempt on American soil. And Congresswoman Emilia Sykes voted against funding the Department of Homeland Security. Sykes voted NO on the Fiscal Year 2026 DHS appropriations bill. Not once. She voted against a DHS stopgap package and said she could not support it. She voted against House Republicans’ latest DHS funding proposal as recently as March 27th. The result? A partial DHS shutdown that began February 14, 2026, due to a lapse in appropriations. Weeks of Secret Service, TSA, FEMA, and Homeland Security operating without full funding - while threat levels against the President were climbing. Congresswoman Sykes, the people of Ohio’s 13th District are watching. The Senate must fund the Department of Homeland Security - fully, without carve-outs, without political conditions. You represent this district. It is time to pick up the phone, call your Senate colleagues, and demand they get this done. No more excuses. No more obstruction. Tonight’s attack on President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is an attack on America itself. A gunman opened fire while the President, First Lady, Vice President, and Cabinet were in attendance. A Secret Service agent was struck thankfully protected by his vest. The President is safe. This is the third attempt on Donald Trump’s life. No political grievance justifies violence against our leaders. Not now, not ever. Grateful for the Secret Service and D.C.
