Bruce Springsteen is currently playing to a #NoKings crowd of over 200,000 people in Saint Paul Minnesota right now! Trump is using government to hurt people who disagree. That is what kings do to scare others. We will not be scared. We will not be silent.

NY Times has essentially confirmed that Israel played a role in stimulating the violent regime change riots that left around 3000 dead in Iran this January 8 and 9, but which were marketed in the West as pro-democracy protests. It was well understood by the Mossad that those riots would help stimulate military action by Trump. Israeli intel merely needed to convince the feeble-minded president that a wave of decapitation strikes would unleash a massive upheaval to immediately topple the Islamic Republic. The January riots were presented to Trump as a preview of what was to come. Western media, including the NY Times and The Guardian, played a central role in legitimizing Israel's deception by falsely characterizing the violent regime change riots as mere protests, massively inflating the death toll and covering up the fact that many were murdered by the Israel-backed rioters themselves The whole of Western media and the Western human rights industrial complex deliberately misrepresented the real character of those riots. But now that the war they helped to instigate is going badly for the US and Israel, that same media is now free to reveal a few kernels of truth.

Hans-Georg Gadamer on Augustine, Time, and the Structure of Hope Gadamer revisits one of Augustine's most radical philosophical moves: the refusal to treat time as a sequence of three equal "beings." What makes Augustine's approach unusual is not just his conclusion, it's his method. He didn't treat the problem of time as an abstract puzzle to be solved from a distance. He brought it before God, interrupting his own argument with prayer, asking for help in the very act of thinking. That intimacy between devotion and reasoning wasn't decoration, it was the point. The insight it produced is deceptively simple. Past and future don't exist as independent realms. They exist only as they press into the present as memory and anticipation held simultaneously in the mind. As Augustine puts it: "We can only think of present signs of the future as being present, and we can only see traces of the past… as being present. Only that can we truly see as 'being.'" This is what he called the distensio animi, a stretching out of the spirit. Gadamer renders it plainly: that is what we call consciousness. The German word for the present, Gegenwart, sharpens this further. Embedded in it is gewärtig sein: to be awaiting, to be open. The present is not a fixed point. It is a posture of readiness that leans forward. Time, then, is not a container you move through. It is the structure of consciousness itself. The tension between what is remembered, what is attended to now, and what is anticipated. You do not have past and future. You are the act of holding them together. From here, Gadamer makes a move that feels almost offhand but lands hard. If consciousness is inherently stretched toward what comes next, then hope isn't a disposition some people choose and others don't. It's built into the architecture of awareness itself. Ernst Bloch was right to foreground it, Gadamer says, because it isn't sentiment, it's structure. "That is why I consider every pessimist a bit insincere; they wouldn't even be here if they didn't have hope." This isn't a rebuke. It's an observation about what it means to persist. To remain conscious is already to be oriented forward whether you name that orientation hope or not. Much of modern anxiety comes from treating time as a problem of storage. Holding onto the past accurately, predicting the future correctly. Augustine and Gadamer suggest a different frame. Time is lived through presence: the traces we carry, the signs we read, the openness we maintain toward what is arriving. Consciousness is the act of stretching across all three without collapsing any of them.

Iran’s ambassador to Germany asked Berlin to clarify the role of Ramstein Air Base in the war. The question was direct. Is the largest American military installation in Europe being used to coordinate, plan, or support strike operations against Iran? Because if it is, then Germany is not a neutral party observing a war from across the Mediterranean. Germany is an active participant whose territory enables the bombing. The ambassador cited what Iran described as a request for clarity under UN Resolution 3314, which defines aggression to include allowing territory to be used by another state for acts of aggression against a third state. The legal framing is precise. If Ramstein’s Combined Air Operations Centre is coordinating targeting data, refuelling schedules, or intelligence distribution for strikes on Iranian territory, then Germany’s national territory is a component of the kill chain. The 3314 definition does not require Germany to fire the weapon. It requires Germany to provide the territory from which the weapon is directed. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius responded that there is no reason at present to doubt the legality of Ramstein’s use. The qualifier at present does the same work as appropriate efforts in the seven-nation statement: it preserves optionality while conceding nothing. He added that Germany would not take part in this war, at most in terms of protection or material support. The phrase at most in terms of protection or material support is extraordinary. Material support to a belligerent conducting air strikes from your territory is participation. The distinction Pistorius is drawing between taking part in the war and providing material support to the country taking part in the war does not exist in international law. It exists in domestic political communication, where it allows the German government to tell its electorate that this is not our war while hosting the air operations centre that makes the war possible. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas made the tension explicit on March 19. She said the war was started by the US and Israel without consulting the EU and despite the bloc’s calls for restraint. Then she said the sentence that captured Europe’s position more honestly than any diplomatic communique: This is not Europe’s war. We are allies of America, but we do not really understand their moves recently. The admission is revelatory. Europe’s most senior foreign policy official publicly stated that the continent’s closest ally launched a major war without explaining its strategic logic to its partners. The allies did not understand the moves. They were not consulted. They are now absorbing the consequences: gas prices doubling, food prices rising, refugee flows from Lebanon reaching one million, and an Iranian diplomat asking whether German soil is part of the targeting infrastructure. Ramstein is not a minor installation. It is the headquarters of US Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa. It hosts the 603rd Air Operations Centre, which provides command and control for all US and NATO air operations across the European and African theatres. The base processes intelligence, coordinates aerial refuelling, and serves as the logistics hub for US military operations extending from the North Atlantic to the Indian Ocean. Whether it is being used for Iran-specific operations is a factual question that the German government has chosen not to answer directly. The firewall between Europe and the Iran war has an American door. It is located in Rhineland-Palatinate. It is called Ramstein. And Iran has publicly asked who is walking through it. open.substack.com/pub/shanakaans…
