On this date in 1966, an impressive Home Rule Day rally was held on the Mall, attended by thousands. Home Rule took 8 more years to achieve. Later this year, we will celebrate its 52nd anniversary. Yet Home Rule itself is challenged today, & we must fight to protect & expand it

Finally, to address the elephant in the room—Crawford’s tenure on the Council was not the shortest, or even the second shortest. Crawford will have served for 175 days, while Sekou Biddle’s 2011 At-Large stint was 123 days & Arrington Dixon’s 1997 At-Large stint was just 109 days

Predictably, CMs who are former Council staffers endorsed Crawford’s pedigree…as a former Council staffer Past/present CMs with this same background: Mendelson, C. Allen, Ambrose, Bonds, D. Crawford, Fenty, Grosso, Henderson, Kane, Lightfoot, May, and Todd (did I miss any?) 2/3

OTD in 2019, we lost the truly epic & exceptional Sterling Tucker. He bridged eras-head of the Urban League & Poor People’s March, named vice chair of the pre-Home Rule Council by Nixon, elected our 1st Council Chair & lost the 1978 mayoral race to Marion Barry by only 1356 votes

Today marked the final Legislative Meeting in her current term of service for Doni Crawford Unique in DC Council history, she was nominated by the full Council to fill a At-Large vacancy until a special election was held From staffer to instant Councilmember, she will be missed
