Think for yourself, act for others. The first step makes you real and the second makes you relevant. Dr. Eric Wood of @TCU - interviewed me in @Forbes about personal branding for emerging adults, a topic I care deeply about. @Bellivyinc forbes.com/sites/ericwood…

Wonderful news from the world of books. Over the past five years, independent booksellers have surged in number by 70%. Last year alone, over 400 new indies opened their doors and began spilling joy into their communities. Here’s that story and more 👉 millersbookreview.com/p/bookish-dive…

@HeadHR_Deepak @Nithya_Shrii Maybe they have a different definition of effort. Sometimes I think much of our differences of perspective stem from misaligned vocabulary.

AI in higher ed isn’t just about adoption—it’s about the gap. Students are moving faster than institutions, and it’s starting to show. The real opportunity? Rethinking how AI supports learning and decision-making. More in @forbes: tinyurl.com/24jvfjyx #FutureOfWork

Some big news: I will be the new Director of Programs at the @BuckleyInst at Yale University this coming June. Leaving DC is bittersweet. Working at @AEI has been an incredible experience for me. But I also look forward to the next chapter in New Haven.

AI isn’t the enemy. It’s a pressure test exposing an education system that stopped adapting. If student writing is weakening, that says as much about what and how we measure as it does about students. The goal should be to build capacity, judgment, and purpose, not reward knowledge and uniform style for their own sake.
National Association of Scholars@NASorg

Because students now use ChatGPT and other AI tools to outline essays, skim readings, and solve homework problems—to perform nearly every assigned task—the majority of the writing they encounter will be AI-generated.

Our relationship to anything is shaped by how we position it in our lives. Make something an enemy, and we give it power. Challenge an enemy, and we put ourselves on the defensive. With AI, I’d rather it prove its value than make me defend my position. After all, the greatest threat to AI is irrelevance, and enemies are rarely irrelevant. Only half a poem this time 😂

@CynthiaLIVE Life is all perspective (well, & eating, & drinking, & laughing, & crying, & winning, & losing, &…). Beyond that, while I appreciate the poetry, I’m not sure I understand your meaning here. Care to explain?

@CynthiaLIVE Or AI is the enemy—or perhaps more precisely, AI is a tool of the enemy. It’s developed via exploitation of creative & moderation workers, & employed at scale to drown truth in irrelevance & to erode agency. AI literacy isn’t the answer to the systemic erosion of human dignity.
neil turkewitz@neilturkewitz

“The purpose of a system is what it does.” —cybernetician Stafford Beer “The purpose of the [AI] system is extraction. The purpose is obedience. The purpose is compliance. The purpose is death – death of agency & death of dignity & death of joy.” —Audrey Watters

@jkam12 The teachers might be seeing it too, but are also stuck in an outdated system of measuring. The speed of ai growth is outpacing systems that aren’t built to adapt quickly or independently of each other.

@CynthiaLIVE teachers are on a crash course on that and seeing it real time on evaluating how it’s used vs how much. If it’s used as a tool and the students are able to actually learn and articulate a subject, I don’t feel they think that’s a bad thing. I don’t think teachers are seeing that

I don’t disagree. Coherence is worth learning, but not as the goal. Treating it that way confuses fluent output with actual thinking. The goal is to teach students coherence and perspective so they can use AI without being misled or used by it. That requires a shift from measuring how much AI is used to evaluating how it is used.

The importance of deep reading and critical thinking as our brains adapt to digital distractions and AI shortcuts is the subject of this year’s Princeton Pre-read book for the Class of 2030, “Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World” by Maryanne Wolf: bit.ly/47OpXeP

Position is often determined by invisible pressure - hard to see and harder to share. When you’re unsure of what is holding you back from moving forward, pull back. You’ll quickly see how strong the force is and where it’s coming from when it can no longer lean on you.
