Ohio Gov DeWine. Great leadership on education. "Kareem, I'm retiring soon. I've got grandkids, and I want them to learn to read. Just that simple." That's not politics, it's leadership. Ohio audited Higher Ed on compliance with the law. Just released. ohiochannel.org/video/governor…

If a child starts behind in reading, the odds of catching up fall fast: • 49% in kindergarten • 29% in first grade • 18% in second • 5% in third We don’t have a third-grade reading crisis. We have an early learning problem. Great take, @ChadAldeman. chadaldeman.com/p/do-not-wait

79% of parents say their kids get all B’s and above—and assume grade-level mastery. Reality: report cards often give a false sense of security about learning.

This is why schools that don’t invest heavily in making sure their children are reading at grade level expectations by the time they exit 1st grade and instead pour their resources in later grades in an attempt to catch them up are not wisely investing their time, money or personnel and worst they are in fact hurting kids. It is true that when it comes to reading support it is better late than never, but when it comes to reading, we need to stop putting all our focus on remediation and actively engage in prevention.

Every article, study, interview shows the 1st step to improve reading results for kids: adults have to be tired of failure enough to reflect and make tough changes. But many refuse to slaughter their sacred cows. "We just have to keep doing this/that." Then you get what you get.

When a kid’s acting out in class, my first question is: ‘How well do they read?’ Struggling readers aren’t bad kids—they’re avoiding shame. Teach them to read and you’ll transform behavior and lives! ⁦@AMEERBARAKA⁩ ⁦@KJWinEducation⁩ ⁦@richardbranson⁩ ⁦
