I think one of the reasons Peak Woke burned itself out so quickly was that so many of the cultural products associated with it were clearly, uh, terrible. It caused real cognitive dissonance to keep insisting that stuff like this had any kind of cultural or even didactic value. I was a mild fan of Gadsby because she was in a show I kind of liked, an Australian Twink answer to Girls called Please Like Me. I was ready to be blown away by this special, and I wasn't, and when I said that I wasn't I got real blowback from my friends who accused me of being a Crypto-Catholic conservative. That wasn't going to work over the long run!
