Every year, a Magellanic penguin named Dindim swims thousands of miles across the ocean to visit the man who once saved his life. In 2011, retired fisherman João Pereira de Souza found the penguin on a beach near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Covered in oil and barely alive, Dindim was nursed back to health by João, who cleaned him, fed him fish, and cared for him until he was strong enough to return to the sea. Everyone expected that would be the last they’d see of the penguin. But months later, Dindim came back, and he has returned every year since. According to reports, Dindim swims roughly 5,000 miles from the coasts of Argentina and Chile just to spend time with João. The penguin allows only João to touch and feed him, forming a bond experts describe as extraordinarily rare between a wild animal and a human. This remarkable friendship has touched people around the world, serving as a beautiful reminder of the power of compassion and the surprising depth of connections possible between humans and animals.

The ANC’s Minister of Water and Sanitation had a meltdown yesterday at the opening of a new water reservoir in Joburg, then went on to claim credit for a project that was started under a DA-led coalition government. DA councillors from the area supplied by this reservoir were not invited, despite members of other political parties being present.
