Our city continues to see a dramatic reduction in violent crime. But as I’ve stated before, we have to keep our foot on the gas. This means providing resources to community-based nonprofits who are addressing some of the root causes of crime.

Violent crime in Philly is at a record low. This is a fact. The same is essentially true for Washington, D.C., and other major American cities @realDonaldTrump is targeting for military invasion.

This work has played a huge role in the historic reductions in violent crime that we are seeing today. I strongly encourage other local nonprofits to apply when the application process reopens later this year.

Terrorizing and assaulting an extremely vulnerable population—in this case, unhoused people—is reprehensible. And unfortunately, we live in a social and political climate that seemingly condones hatred against marginalized communities.

I commend the excellent investigation conducted by the Philadelphia Police Department in this case. The amount of firearms and narcotics seized here highlights the threat Mr. Rivera posed to the Kensington community.

The policies coming from the current administration in D.C. are making it easier for U.S. citizens to commit crimes against marginalized people like immigrants. I consider this case to be more serious than just a robbery. This is a crime against an entire community of people.
