There’s a beautiful new addition to the Mountain View Campus. Yesterday we celebrated the ribbon cutting for the Trinidad “Trini” Garza Early College High School Building Z. Garza Early College High School represents a distinctive partnership between Dallas College and Dallas ISD, with the high school located directly on the Mountain View Campus. When it opened 20 years ago, Garza became the first dual credit high school in Dallas. Through this model, students take college courses while still in high school and can earn an associate degree by the time they graduate. Mountain View is also proud to partner with 10 high schools across Dallas, Grand Prairie and Duncanville ISDs, along with private and charter schools, supporting instruction for more than 4,000 dual credit students each year. These partnerships expand access, accelerate college completion, and meaningfully change the trajectory of students and families within our communities.

“Through therapy and soul-searching, I came to understand that school had always felt like my safe place growing up. School was my getaway from all the drama at home. That realization helped me understand my desire to work with kids from similar backgrounds.” - Darius, Dallas College Bachelor of Early Childhood Education student. Read more about Darius and his journey as a father and aspiring child educator below. What’s your story that led you to where you are now at Dallas College? “I was one parallel parking test away from becoming a bus driver, but I realized that the schedule would conflict with getting my daughter to and from pre-K. Then, I heard about a job fair within the district, so I went and was offered a job in a program working with students diagnosed with emotional disturbances. The pay was less, but I knew I would rather be in a classroom with students than on a bus with them. I stayed in that role for several years, and now I work in technology, but education has always been the goal. So, that’s why I’m excited about my path as a Bachelor of Early Childhood Education student here at Dallas College.” How has being a parent shaped you? “Parenting is hard. I don’t know how our parents had so many kids. My daughter is in fifth grade. She’s amazingly the opposite of everything I was: student council leader, maintaining several extracurriculars, artsy, kind — just a great kid. What’s hard is having conversations about why my relationship with my parents isn’t like hers is with her parents. I hope that I am breaking the cycle. If nothing else motivates me, she does.” As a male going into education, do you see yourself as a role model? “Absolutely. In many schools I’ve worked in, I’ve been the only Black male. I’ve seen how students, especially young Black boys, respond differently when they see someone who looks like them in that role. I had a student recently ask how to get my technology job and if he could do the same. I told him, ‘Start now. Don’t just use your iPad for fun; use it to learn skills like video editing or coding.’ I want to plant seeds that inspire young students to explore what they’re capable of.”

In 1972, the Dallas College Richland Campus opened for fall classes. The campus included sheep grazing on the farmland and ducks swimming on the lake that separates the campus buildings. Architects carefully protected the trees, the lakes — even the animals — as they planned the campus.

He began his dream of becoming a news anchor through dual credit classes at Dallas College. After a fulfilling career in television news in markets across Texas and Florida, Malcolm Hornsby now leads the Dallas College executive and board communications team. Malcolm uses the skills and mindset he developed as a student while supporting our board of trustees, chancellor and key leaders in communicating the college’s strategic priorities. Learn more about his story below: Let’s start with your background. How did your journey with Dallas College begin? "My journey with Dallas College began through dual credit while I was in high school. I attended the Rosie M. Collins Sorrells School of Education and Social Services at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Magnet Center. They did not have radio and television — my passion since the age of seven — so it was either business, science and engineering, health or education, and I landed in education. Through that program, I took my first dual credit class at the Eastfield Campus, which still has a special place in my heart. I remember being in a newer building and feeling, for the first time, like I was truly on a college campus alongside ‘real’ college students. I also took classes at El Centro. That experience became my introduction to Dallas College and higher education as a whole." What did your experience as a Dallas College student teach you about yourself that still shows up today? "It taught me independence and self-sufficiency. Taking classes at the downtown campus while still in high school meant navigating the city, managing my time and getting myself where I needed to be. That experience showed me I could handle responsibility, and with the right resources and support, I was capable of succeeding. It gave me confidence that I could navigate challenges on my own." How did being a Dallas College student prepare you for your career? "Dallas College taught me responsibility and follow-through. The structure is there to support you, but you still have to do your part — ask questions, speak up when you don’t understand something and take ownership of your learning. That mindset carries into my career today. I’m not afraid to say when I don’t know something or to ask for clarity, and that confidence started back then. It also reinforced that I was capable of doing college-level work." What would you say to someone who thinks community college isn't “real” college like a traditional four-year university? "I would say they’ve clearly never taken a class here. Community college requires real work and real commitment — you don’t just show up and walk away with a degree. It’s a place for lifelong learning, where students can earn certificates, associate degrees and even bachelor’s degrees. There is also support like child care and other services that help students succeed. It’s not a continuation of high school — it’s meaningful, challenging work with real fulfillment."

We want every Dallas College graduate to walk out the door prepared to be innovative in their industry of choice. That's why we partnered with @dhd_films to assemble a Vū One Virtual Production Soundstage that gives our students hands-on access to the tools reshaping film, television and brand storytelling, right here at Dallas College. Our faculty members are being professionally trained by DHD Films’ Dallas studio, learning how to integrate virtual production wall technology into curriculum design, media creation and virtual production. This unveiling event showcases what’s possible when higher education and industry come together to build for the future, enabling content at the speed of thought.
