@PetePiranio @vonderleyen @PetePiranio if you want to be taken seriously, then I respectfully suggest you reconsider your statement on VAT. VAT affects all products sold, it´s just silly to suggest this puts imports to a disadvantage to local (EU) products and thus warrant retaliatory tariffs.

It’s real simple. Agree to a real fair trade deal (not just zero tariffs, no VAT taxes, etc), that’s all the U.S. wants, but if they don’t get it, then they’ll make it fair themselves by imposing tariffs to level the playing field. If the latter happens, enjoy paying more for your social benefits that we indirectly subsidize by carrying your defense. If the EU wants to get nasty, you will see a gradual withdrawal. Americans are fed up with the disrespect of unfair trade while we carry your defense. Prime example, we just sent two carriers to protect the Indian Ocean to Red Sea route from the Yemen terrorist. Whose market benefits the most with this particular trade route- the EU. Why you all afraid to compete on a level playing field?

We took note of the announcement by President Trump. We want to give negotiations a chance. While finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days. If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in. Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues. As I have said before, all options remain on the table.
