One of the most successful, popular, and prolific singers of Indian cinema, whose captivating melodies kept several generations of music lovers spellbound. Asha Ji began singing professionally at the age of 9, recorded her first film song in 1943 and by the 1950s, had carved a niche for herself in Bollywood. Immensely talented and hugely popular, she was a seven-time winner of the Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Award and a two-time winner of the National Film Award- for musical gems like “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” from Umrao Jaan and “Mera Kuch Saamaan” from Ijaazat. Known for her range and versatility, Asha Ji’s work, in multiple languages, includes film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian Classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, Rabindra Sangeets and Nazrul Geetis. Her melodious voice will continue to live in the hearts of legions of her fans and admirers; and inspire upcoming singers and students of music.
