What makes Organic Chemistry so awesome? That after ONE lecture on the rules you can design a molecule that is stable, could be made, but has never been made.

@mbeisen It’s also worth remembering Jerry Donohue who told Watson about the relevant tautomers of purines and pyrimidines, making “Watson-Crick” base pairing possible.

The solving of the structure of DNA should be remembered as a the apotheosis of science as a collective endeavor. Many people contributed to it in an active and material way - with data, ideas and models - and yet take any individual out of the equation, and the discovery still would almost certainly have been made at roughly the same time. That it is instead immortalized as - depending on your perspective - the unique work of some small subset of those people is a testament to our general fetishization of individuals, and the narratives spun to try and elevate particular ones. Maybe now that the last of those individuals has died, we can focus less on apportioning credit for the discovery, and more on the elegance and impact of the natural process they uncovered.

Matt Ridley dispels the myth that Jim Watson stole Rosalind Franklin’s famous “Photo 51”. Photo 51 was Ray Gosling’s. Watson didn’t steal it, Wilkins showed it to him. Franklin was badly wronged: her institute banned women from commonroom & deprived her of collegial discussion spectator.co.uk/article/who-re….
