People need to stop treating reading as fandom. If you like a book, take note so you can pick up the author’s next book if it appeals. But you need to stop getting ATTACHED to authors. This parasocial style of media interaction is crippling your ability to engage with fiction.

Many universities, like the one in our town, have “friends of the library” programs allowing you to get a reader’s card even if you’re not a student. If you live in a college town, I can’t recommend this enough. A good university library is just about my favorite place on earth.

none of the people disagreeing with me have an even remotely coherent argument and are fundamentally unable to explain why anime is bad but other popular pieces of media get a pass.
They just default to calling you a pedophile you because they are fundamentally incapable of explaining their worldview in a way that excludes what they don't like but doesn't implicate the art they are okay with.
I take solace in knowing I am objectively correct.

“At that time, you know, just in the Americas, I was selling ten million DS’ a year, we’re driving a lot of revenue. We had a lot of scale. And, at the time, Amazon was looking to get bigger into the video game space. Amazon’s mentality back then is they wanted to have the lowest price out in the marketplace, even lower than Walmart. And one of their executives called me… well, it was a conversation that got to me after it had progressed through all of the levels of my sales organization, and essentially what Amazon wanted is an obscene amount of support, financial support, so they could have the lowest price and beat Walmart. I literally said to the executive, “You know that’s illegal, right? I can’t do that.” You know you get silence on the other end, ‘but this is what I want.’
Literally we stopped selling to Amazon, and it’s because I wasn’t going to do something illegal. I wasn’t going to do something that would put at risk the relationship we have with other retailers. But it also set the stage to say, look, you’re not going to push me around. This is the way we do business. And so that’s how over time you build respect.”

Did you know you can oppose government censorship without supporting the content? You can think something is awful, refuse to engage with it, and still not want the government deciding what gets removed. Because the moment we justify censorship based on “I don’t like this,” we hand that same power to someone else, who might decide your work crosses the line. That’s how that works.
