So to this video. I was in Monaco for a UEFA event, so intent to expensive hotel for lunch. So, I was sitting in the lobby having lunch when this guy casually walked past me. The moment I saw him, I knew I recognized him—but I just couldn’t place it. I kept thinking, “This guy is definitely a footballer… but who is he?” It was driving me crazy. A little while later, he walked back through the lobby, and I told myself, “I can’t let this go.” So I approached him and said, “Bro, I know you, but forgive me, I’m struggling to remember your name. I swear if you say it, I’ll know immediately.” He smiled and said, “Folarin Balogun.” I instantly lit up. “Yes! I know you… Nigerian!” Then he surprised me. He said, “I know you too.” I was like, “Wait, what? Are you serious?” He said, “You’re a journalist. I remember one of your interviews with Ighalo.” That moment honestly meant a lot to me. Out of all the places in the world, to be recognized like that—it was special. So I asked him, “Can we get this on video? This is a moment I’d really love to capture.” And that’s how this video came to be.

When I say Nigerians just have mouth, we don't like football as much as we think. We like the idea of football, but not the game itself. Someone even told me our realities are different, I've seen my colleague at work travel every weekend to watch his 8th-tier team, Blyth Spartans. The club went into bankruptcy, they started contributing money to save the club, he has kids and his salary isn't even over the moon, just average. Yet, he would leave everything to sometimes travel 4 hours to games. That is commitment, that is love. It is not convenient. I have a friend who uses Klarna or those credit card companies to pay for season tickets, and he oays back little by little, nothing is convenient about that. Again, there are people that travel abroad and swear they will watch their teams every week when they get to England for instance, they've gone 5 years without going once. There's always an excuse not to do something. Always. One guy even tweeted that we will sell out games more than DR Congo at the world cup, LIE. LIE. BIG LIE. Just mouth lol.

A response from a Nigerian football stake holder to this tweet via WhatsApp. My brother.. How are you doing? Well done.. I've been following your videos from the WC.. Regarding Nigerians and jerseys, it has little to do with income and more to do with lack of patriotism. . Nigerians only remember the national teams when there is a match or tournament at hand.. I have several friends who will spend hard cash to travel for tournaments. Only for them the start asking me for jerseys.. They did prefer to buy English Premier league Jerseys rather than the National team jerseys. I wish you were in Nigeria when arsenal won the Premier League. Even the okada riders were wearing Arsenal Jersey.. I have a friend who bought 1k pieces of relics arsenal jerseys (N40m). He distributed them to arsenal fans around Abuja.. This guy doesn't own one super eagles jersey.. In morocco it was arsenal jersey he was wearing to go watch the eagles. I asked him why he doesn't patronize the national team merchandise. He said the national team doesn't give him joy like Arsenal. I've often opined that our support doesn't go beyond our mouths when compared to other nationals. You were in Ivory Coast for AFCON. You saw how the locals patronized their National team colours.. My brother we have a very long way to go oh. .

While watching the USA vs. Paraguay game, I noticed that almost everyone in the stadium was wearing the national team jersey. Those jerseys aren’t cheap, they typically cost anywhere from $70 to $100. To me, that says something about the level of disposable income in that country. People can afford to show their support in that way. If you compare that to a country like Nigeria, you rarely see that kind of widespread display. It’s not because people don’t support the team, they do—but many simply can’t afford to spend that much on a jersey.

Today’s predictions. I’ll select two winners. 20k each (£10). Qatar v Switzerland Brazil v Morocco I’ll make a separate post about the other two games in the morning. As usual, let’s just have fun, no use of burners, not worth it.
