⚖️ Ultimately, climate change presents a dual impact: • ✔️ A significant reduction in cold-related mortality.  • ⚠️ A persistent, stabilizing risk from extreme heat.

👵 Age is a critical factor. People 60 and older remain the most  susceptible to both heat and cold exposure. As Madrid's population  continues to age, this demographic shift heavily shapes current vulnerability.

In fact, since the early 2000s, the extreme heat-attributable  mortality fraction has remained stubbornly stable at approximately 1%, with even a slight increase in recent years.

🔥 Heat, however, tells a different story. The mortality fraction linked to extreme heat only slightly decreased from 1.23% to 0.84%. ➡️ A much more limited decline of about 1.5-fold.

🏠 This isn't just about warming winters. Better heating systems, slum eradication, and advancements in public health and infrastructure have been key drivers of this adaptation.

🌬️ The impact of moderate cold saw an even sharper decline, dropping from 10.85% of deaths to 1.02%. ➡️ A 10-fold reduction over the study period.

❄️ Mortality attributable to extreme cold plummeted from 2.27% in 1890–1899 to just 0.33% in 2010–2019. ➡️ That is a 7-fold reduction.

📊 Between the 1890s and 2010s, Madrid's average temperature steadily increased by +2.2°C. Over the same period, the city's population  went from around 470,000 to over 3 million inhabitants.
