#OnThisDay in 1948, Witold Pilecki was executed. He voluntarily entered Auschwitz to document Nazi crimes, and fought in the Warsaw Uprising - only to be arrested, tried in a sham trial, and killed. 25 May is the International Day of Heroes of the Fight against Totalitarianism.

📅 #OnThisDay in 1944, nearly 6,000 Roma and Sinti prisoners at Auschwitz-Birkenau fought back when SS guards came to send them to the gas chambers. Armed and determined, they forced the Germans to retreat - delaying their execution by several months.

📅 #OnThisDay in 1955, the Warsaw Pact was signed in Warsaw - the Soviet Union's response to West Germany joining NATO. It formalized Soviet dominance over Eastern Bloc armies and remained in force until the end of the Cold War in the early 1990s.

📅 #OnThisDay in 1945, Soviet troops liberated Stutthof, the first Nazi German camp established outside prewar Germany. Over 65,000 had perished there; in the final months alone, 50,000 were forced on death marches or loaded onto Baltic barges to die at sea.

#OnThisDay in 1977, Stanisław Pyjas, a 23-year-old Polish student activist, was found dead in Kraków under suspicious circumstances. He was murdered by the Security Service. His death sparked student protests and led to the founding of the Student Committee of Solidarity.
