Every year, the world's glaciers lose 266 billion tonnes of ice. This Saturday marks #WorldGlaciersDay — a reminder of what's at stake. Understanding how glaciers and ice sheets move, thin, and lose mass is essential for projecting future sea level rise. @ESA's Climate Change Initiative Glaciers and Ice Sheets projects deliver the long-term satellite records to do just that. Both Greenland and Antarctica are losing ice: 🌍 Glaciers worldwide: − 266 Gt/yr 🟢 Greenland ice sheet: − 166 Gt/yr, driven by rising air temperatures and surface melting 🔵 Antarctica ice sheet: − 111 Gt/yr, driven by ocean warming and increased glacier flow Find out more about the projects and access the data via the links in the comments.

A new study reveals that Siberian peat fires account for one-third of all fire emissions – far more than previously estimated. 🛰️ Researchers analysed high-resolution Landsat satellite data and found that peat fires accounted for 33% of total emissions between 2001-2023, compared to just 2.39% in existing datasets. 🔥 The difference? Conventional sensors at 250-500 metres miss smaller fires and misclassify peat fires, whereas Landsat's 30-metre resolution allows better detection and characterisation. Snow cover is one of Earth's most sensitive climate indicators, yet a consistent long-term daily record has been missing, until now.❄️ @ESA's Climate Change Initiative Snow project developed a 45-year global daily snow cover record, spanning from 1979 to 2023. Researchers from @unibern harmonised data from 16 satellite sensors into a single, gap-filled dataset. With high temporal and regional detail, it captures the complexity of snow cover changes in a way that was previously not possible. The dataset supports climate modelling, water resource management, and permafrost research – making it a valuable tool for better understanding Earth's climate system. With knowledge comes evidence-based decisions and action. The '10 New Insights in Climate Science' details the most critical findings from various fields of climate change research – published annually as a collaborative effort between @FutureEarth, @TheEarthLeague, and the @WCRP_climate. Among this year's findings, data from ESA's Climate Change Initiative contributed to key conclusions on the planet's energy balance, sea surface temperatures, and the weakening land carbon sink. 🌍
