The Barbary Lion (Panthera leo leo) lived in the mountains and deserts of North Africa from Morocco to Egypt. Fossils date back to 100,000 years ago, but sightings were recorded up until the 1960s. Bounties were placed on hunting the lions until they went extinct.

The Atlas bear (ursus arctos crowtheri) was a brown bear native to N. Africa, and the only native African bear species that lived into modern times. DNA studies date bones as early as 10,000 BP, but they went extinct in the late 19th century after modern firearms were developed.
