Afghanistan has one of the world's highest rates of childhood lead exposure, which causes permanent brain damage. Nearly all children here have significant lead poisoning. Researchers in the US have found the source of the lead. But nobody has told the Afghan public. Thread.

According to psychology, if you leave every Social interaction overanalyzing what you said or how you came across, that's not just overthinking, it's often a sign of chronic masking. You weren't taught to just exist, you were taught to perform.

Arabic has 14 words for love. Each one describes a different stage. And here's what got me. Each one comes from a root that has nothing to do with love. Until you see the connection. And then you can't unsee it. All 14. Let me walk you through them.

Knowing when you're wrong about something is its own brain skill, run by a small patch of tissue right behind your forehead. People with more of it are noticeably better at catching their own mistakes. Your IQ doesn't predict any of this. In 2010, a team at University College London ran a simple test. Volunteers looked at pairs of grainy images, picked which one was slightly brighter, and said how sure they felt. Some got the answer right but felt unsure. Others got it wrong but felt fully confident. After hundreds of tries, they could rank everyone on one thing: how often you know when you got it right. Brain scans pointed to one spot. People who could tell when they got it right had more gray matter in a region called the frontopolar cortex, behind the forehead. Dozens of follow-up studies have found the same thing. This part of the brain is also the newest. It's bigger in humans than in any other animal, and it finishes growing around age 25. A 2013 study ran similar tests on people aged 11 to 41. Between 11 and 17, their accuracy on the task stayed flat. But their ability to tell when they got it wrong improved sharply. The same patch explains the Dunning-Kruger effect, where people who know the least about something are often the most confident about it. The reason is mechanical. If you can't see when you're wrong, you also can't see that you can't see when you're wrong. You can train this. Researcher John Hattie reviewed 800 studies of what helps kids learn. Teaching kids to think about their own thinking landed near the top: pause to check yourself, ask if you really understand, plan before you start. Kids who learn this jump roughly 25 percentile points in school. It's the difference between a C and a B. A separate review of 48 classroom programs found the same pattern. Students who learned to track their own progress and revise their approach improved fast, and gains kept growing for months. The biggest jumps were in kids from low-income families. The same idea works for mental health. British psychologist Adrian Wells built a therapy around it. Instead of arguing patients out of their anxious or depressed thoughts, his approach teaches them to notice the thoughts, see them as just thoughts, and stop letting them run their lives. Recovery rates run around 70%. Some studies find it beats standard cognitive behavioral therapy, the most common treatment. Twin studies put genes at only 16 to 34% of this skill. The rest is environment and training. The payoff shows up in school grades, mental health, and the decisions you don't end up regretting.
