We join the Sharks and hockey community in mourning the passing of Rangers alum Wayne Thomas. We are thinking of Wayne’s friends and loved ones during this difficult time.

The NHL Alumni Association is deeply saddened to learn that Wayne Thomas has passed away at the age of 77. A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Wayne played junior hockey for his hometown Ottawa Capitals of the Central Canada Hockey League before playing three seasons of collegiate hockey with the University of Wisconsin. Wayne made his professional debut in 1971 with the Montréal Voyageurs of the AHL, winning the Calder Cup the following season with the Nova Scotia Voyageurs, after their relocation from Montréal. On January 14, 1973, Wayne became just the tenth goaltender to record a shutout in their NHL debut, stopping all 20 shots in a 3-0 Canadiens victory over the Vancouver Canucks. After two seasons and 52 games played with the Canadiens, Wayne joined the Toronto Maple Leafs ahead of the 1975-76 season, earning an All-Star game appearance in January 1976. Wayne suited up for the New York Rangers for the final four seasons of his career from 1977 to 1981. Immediately following his playing career, Wayne joined the Rangers coaching staff, first as a goaltending coach before becoming an assistant coach. After a handful of seasons coaching in the IHL, Wayne joined the San Jose Sharks as an assistant coach ahead of the 1993-94 NHL season. Wayne held various front office positions for the Sharks for over 20 seasons, becoming deeply ingrained in the San Jose hockey community. We send our deepest condolences to Wayne’s family, friends, and former teammates during this incredibly difficult time.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Maple Leafs goaltender, Wayne Thomas. In 97 games over two seasons, Wayne posted a 37-38-18 record and recorded the win in Darryl Sittler’s famous 10-point game on February 7th, 1976. A long-time NHL executive and goalie coach, Wayne passionately worked on and off the ice with NHL goaltenders throughout his career. Our thoughts are with Wayne’s friends and family.
