🤝 In an era of information overload and growing scepticism, trust has become one of the most valuable and fragile assets for publishers. The final instalment in our three-part series examines 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝘆 “𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸”. Beyond simply delivering accurate reporting, this means making the journalistic process more visible by explaining editorial decisions, providing context around sources and methods, and being transparent about what is known and what is not. This approach not only strengthens credibility but also deepens engagement. When audiences can see the rigour, judgement and integrity behind each story, they are more likely to recognise and value the role of quality journalism. 🗞️ As audience behaviours shift and discovery becomes increasingly fragmented, traditional newsroom workflows are being challenged. New insights from 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝟮, produced in collaboration with the Northwestern University Knight Lab, explores what it means to become a 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆-𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 by reversing the traditional journalism process and designing content with distribution in mind from the outset. Rather than relying on the conventional “publish then distribute” model, leading publishers are rethinking how stories are created, structured and surfaced across platforms to better meet audiences where they are. This approach reflects a broader industry shift: audiences are no longer coming directly to news sites but encountering content across a complex mix of platforms, formats and touchpoints. In the article, we explore: 🔹 What “discovery-first” really means in practice 🔹 Why reversing the journalism process is becoming essential 🔹 How newsrooms can adapt workflows to align with modern consumption habits 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 👉 eu1.hubs.ly/H0sTnxB0 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀(𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺) 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀. Newsrooms are under pressure from every direction: AI is moving from experimentation to integration, audience behaviour is fragmenting across platforms, cost pressures are increasing and editorial teams are being asked to do more with less. Yet while the industry benefits from strong research on audience trends and financial sustainability, there is still no recurring global benchmark focused on the newsroom itself. That is why FT Strategies, in partnership with @NewspaperWorld, is developing the 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆. We are gathering insight from 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 and 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 worldwide to understand: 🔹 How newsroom strategy is defined and executed 🔹 How AI and automation are being integrated into workflows 🔹 How organisational structures are evolving 🔹 Where editorial investment priorities are shifting 🔹 Which skills will define successful newsrooms The findings will inform a flagship report, supported by @Arc XP and launching at the WAN-IFRA 77th World News Media Congress in June 2026, that establishes a global benchmark for newsroom transformation. If you are an editor or newsroom leader, we invite you to share your perspective. Your insight will help shape how the industry navigates the next phase of change. 💭 Are you designing for Gen Z or for how people actually engage with content? New insights from 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗻 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝟮, produced in collaboration with the Knight Lab, challenge the industry’s reliance on generational targeting. Rather than focusing on age groups, this piece explores why publishers should design for 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, the various ways audiences interact with content based on their context, intent and time available. The research highlights a key shift: the same person can move between multiple modes in a single day, from quick updates to more focused, in-depth consumption. Treating audiences as fixed segments risks missing these dynamic behaviours entirely. In the article, we break down: 🔹 What “modes of engagement” are and why they matter 🔹 Why demographic-led strategies can fall short 🔹 How aligning content, product and distribution with user intent can drive stronger engagement For publishers aiming to build more relevant and flexible audience strategies, this perspective offers valuable guidance. ❓ How can publishers turn anonymous reach into sustainable, recurring revenue? Our recent article explores how the Financial Times built a registration strategy that accelerated subscriber conversion, increased average revenue per user (ARPU) and strengthened its market position. Over the past 15 years, the Financial Times has 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝟯 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀. Registration has been central to this journey, transforming anonymous traffic into known users and systematically progressing them toward subscription. The article highlights three pillars behind this strategy: 1️⃣ Treating registration as a product with a clear value exchange 2️⃣ Using first-party data to power personalisation 3️⃣ Continually testing and refining the registration wall As a result, the Financial Times’ registered users: ✅ 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝟯–𝟰𝟬𝘅 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 than anonymous readers ✅ Command 𝟰𝟱% 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 than non-logged-in users ✅ Convert around 𝟭𝟬% 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 as a result of a more personalised experience 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 to discover how a well-designed registration strategy can strengthen audience relationships and drive long-term growth 👉 eu1.hubs.ly/H0sD8xX0 #DigitalSubscriptions #FirstPartyData #AudienceStrategy #MediaInnovation

At the recent News in the Digital Age conference, Financial Times CEO Jon Slade delivered a clear message to publishers and technology leaders: in a world where content is abundant and intelligence is increasingly cheap, human judgement is the scarce and strategic asset. In his closing remarks, Jon argued that the future of quality journalism in the age of generative AI will not be determined by technology alone, but by the choices we make about how it is designed, governed and valued. He highlighted five key themes: 🔹 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁 The ability to decide what matters, what is true and what is responsible to publish will define successful news organisations. 🔹 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 AI will either strengthen or weaken trust depending on how it is built and deployed. Its impact is shaped by people, incentives and governance, not inevitability. 🔹 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆 No newsroom operates in isolation. Platforms, distribution systems and AI models all shape the wider information environment. Technology platforms must be incentivised to be discoverable, distinguishable and properly rewarded if trust is to endure. 🔹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 Human judgement is costly. It requires trained journalists, editorial oversight, and long-term investment. Sustainable revenue models and responsible technology partnerships are essential to support this work. 🔹 𝗔 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺-𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 Will journalism be treated as raw material to be scraped and recombined, or recognised as the product of human judgement—carrying cost, accountability, and value? This is not merely a technical question, but a moral and economic one. Read the full article to discover key extracts from his speech 👉 eu1.hubs.ly/H0s90KZ0
