In 1971, engineers from the Soviet Union ignited a fire in a gas-filled hole in the Turkmenistan desert. Anticipating that the flames would extinguish within days, they were surprised when the fire continued to burn. Now, 52 years later, this site, known as “The Door to Hell,” is still ablaze. On April 20, 1990, 17-year-old Christopher Kerze stayed home from school in Eagan, Minnesota, saying he had a headache. When his parents returned later that day, both Christopher and the family’s blue 1988 Dodge Caravan were gone. The family dog was also found loose. He left a short note that read: Mom, Something important came up + feeling somewhat better. Back by six. (Unless I get lost.) Love, Chris The word lost was underlined twice. Christopher never returned. He withdrew $200 from his savings account that day. The following day, his parents received another handwritten note saying he had pretended to be sick so he could take the car and leave. He said he did not know where he was going and apologized to his family. Two days after he was last seen, the van was found abandoned on a roadside in Itasca County, near the George Washington State Forest and Chippewa National Forest, about twenty miles from Grand Rapids, where his grandparents lived. A note identifying the van's ownership was left inside. An extensive search of the area found no trace of him. Authorities believe he may have left the area on foot or by hitchhiking. Christopher was described as an excellent student who had been invited to join the National Honor Society and named a National Merit Scholar semi-finalist. He was on the swim team, played clarinet, and enjoyed skiing, camping, reading, computers, and laser tag. Friends and family said there were no obvious signs of serious distress in his life before he disappeared. At the time, he had taken his father’s Mossberg 20-gauge bolt-action shotgun (1954–1956 model), but there was no indication that he brought any ammunition. Investigators believe the firearm may have been left somewhere in the rural area and encourage anyone who may have found such a gun since 1990 to contact authorities. His case remains unsolved and is often classified as a runaway situation. Years later, in 2004, the Eagan Police Department received an anonymous letter stating that they should stop searching and that Christopher would return when ready. The message could not be verified. His parents also reported receiving frequent hang-up phone calls with background noise resembling a party. This happened for about six months before the calls stopped. They believe these calls may have been from Christopher, although this was never confirmed. Today, Christopher’s parents still live in the same house with the same phone number, continuing to hope for answers and for the chance to see their son again.
