Farah was studying architecture in Paris when she met the Shah, she had no royal background and her selection was driven almost entirely by the need for an heir after two previous marriages had produced only daughters. What's less known is that she became genuinely influential in Iranian cultural policy, founding museums, supporting contemporary Iranian artists, and building institutions that survived the revolution even as she didn't. The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, which she established, contains one of the most valuable collections of Western modern art outside Europe and America, Warhols, Pollocks, Rothkos assembled before 1979 and largely kept in storage by the Islamic Republic ever since, too valuable to destroy and too ideologically awkward to display.

The 1959 wedding of the Shah of Iran and the 21-year-old Farah Pahlavi... In December 1959, one of the most photographed royal weddings of the era took place in Tehran. Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, then about 40 years old, married Farah Pahlavi, a 21-year-old architecture student he had met earlier that year in Paris. The ceremony, held at Golestan Palace, was designed to project modernity and royal continuity. Farah’s gown was created by the House of Dior, and her jewelry included the Noor-ol-Ain diamond tiara, one of the most valuable pieces in the Iranian crown collection. This was the Shah’s third marriage, and unlike the previous two, it produced a male heir within a year, securing the line of succession. Farah would later become the only crowned Empress in modern Iranian history in 1967, playing a visible role in cultural and educational initiatives across the country. What began as a royal spectacle would, within two decades, be overtaken by revolution, bringing an end to the monarchy in 1979. Farah’s wedding dress was so heavily embroidered with pearls and crystals that it reportedly weighed around 15 kilograms (33 lbs), a striking symbol of the opulence of the era. © Reddit #archaeohistories

I'm sad to report that my friend Peter Sinclair, one of Britain's greatest cinematographers, died on Saturday. He worked on 100s of productions, from Pete Walker's House of Whipcord, to Stanley Long's Adventures of a Taxi Driver + Madonna's Like a Virgin video. I will miss him.
