the entire franchise exist solely because it has lore that allows it to exist, the miniatures look the way they do because they are described by lore, the games are based on characters and world building of the lore, all art, armor, vehicles, cities, planets, gods, characters, from all species and cultures human or otherwise in 40k, is because of the lore, as well as the plot its self and the scenes of events in the franchise are the way they are from lore. with out lore you dont have sanguineous, horus, or any other primarcs and their stories or their sons, you dont have the chaos gods or the emperor of mankind, or eldar, necron or tyranids, or anything else. with out lore there is no warhammer 40k, the stories and world building from the lore is what allows the world of 40k and everything in it to exist, and if you dont like 40k lore or reject its lore continuity, than why pretend to be a 40k fan?

@coronelpanic @Spinegrinder117 As a Votann player, I agree. Their community formed around models and rules first and lore a distant second, though what they have is pretty good and everyone loves the "imperial pigeon" joke and the fleshing out of common life in the one book we have.

@Spinegrinder117 Votann is an amazing example of why lore doesn't mean shit for sales. They didn't get a novel until years after the army launched. Instead everyone rushed out and bought it because the previewed rules were fucking absurd.

@LavenderGhast See, this would be a good point if AoS wasn't massively selling more than WHFB ever did and Old World wasn't on its last legs not even two years after launch.

The irony being they blew up fantasy thinking not enough people would care because they wanted a new game. P*ssed everyone off with the end times just for the launch of their shiny new game and made the lore basically "do whatever you want" nebulous and not even a proper map to orientate the factions. Nearly everyone hated it, so they've spent the last few years fixing and chiselling away at the setting to give it a more concrete setting and established lore. Flaunting the lore side of things as not as important as the models actively harmed AoS at launch and it's still not recovered, despite having some of the best models out of any Warhammer range. Which proves that good models alone can't move armies as much as combining it with developed worldbuilding around those armies. Like others, I don't just want my army to look good, I want to know what their motivations are, who they are as a faction, why they're fighting, where they're fighting, what stories exist for the named characters. There's factions with absolutely beautiful models but I don't collect them because I didn't like their lore, didn't vibe with the factions motivations and I know i'm not alone in this kind of collecting.

Because no one is going to drop $50-$100 on something they know nothing about. Especially something that will take hours to assemble and then paint. If lore really didn't matter or contribute in any meaningful way to miniature sales, then you can bet your ass GW would never bother with it at all. Publishing lore/books is an investment into driving interest into purchasing minis. If it wasnt there and there was nothing compelling to drive those sales, then eventually it fails. Is it folly to say that Lore is more important? Yes but it is equally so, to say it's 'secondary' and is only used by clowns like Noise to justify changing it to fit their own personal politics. Thats his entire goal when he says that kind of thing. To make lore sound trivial, even though it does clearly matter to him, so that he and other woke types can demand whatever changes fits their own world views.

From all the players I've met IRL, both from 40k and AoS (hell, even Old Slop), not a single one of them chose their armies because of the lore. They chose them because they looked cool.

Warhammer 40k has always been lore and canon first, minis second. It released without a dedicated mini line, was incepted as a Narrative game and RPG first (as sated by Priesley and Ansell) and, has had more space in its Rulebooks/Codexes dedicated to background and lore than mini collecting or list building. Mini catalogues were also few and far between the numerous sources books and article collections for lore. Anyone saying otherwise is either a post 8th Ed parasite or a consumer brain half wit. Either way, fuck off my lawn posers.
