I recently spoke with Jeffrey Emanuel @doodlestein who is widely attributed with catalyzing the recent $2 trillion dollar market correction in the wake of DeeSpeek. Lots of additional context on AI valuations. diginomica.com/jeffrey-emanue…

@techczech @daniel_271828 I think the more cautious voices are talking about the more agentic and autonomous swarm implications of systems of systems that we don't understand yet, and we mostly haven't seen. The more enthusiastic voices just consider the new tools search on steroids.

@daniel_271828 Just like with any phenomenon, we know exactly how LLMs work at some level of abstraction/control and not at all at others. Much of the debate about what we do and don't understand is rarely talking about the same level of abstraction.

Yann LeCun should lose (even more) credibility & good-faith points for this post - *no one* knows how specific large, trained AI models (eg GPT-4) work on a mechanistic level. You don’t know how, I don’t know how, those who trained GPT-4 don’t know, and Yann doesn’t know how. What he’s doing here is dishonestly implying he (& those who trained GPT-4, etc) do know how. If he wants to argue that mechanistic understanding is unnecessary, he can argue that. He could claim understating of the training process itself (without really understanding the finished product) is sufficient. Many researchers would disagree, but there’s at least a plausible good-faith debate there. But he’s not doing that. Instead, he’s using his position of status to try to shut down that debate by implying his would-be debate partners are simply ignorant. Fact is, *everyone* in machine learning knows that we don’t have mechanistic understanding of these models. His comment here won’t change their minds. So I can only assume he’s trying to mislead the public & policymakers about the state of scientific understanding on this issue, as well as paint those who want to regulate this technology as more ignorant than they are.
Yann LeCun@ylecun

Weird doomer argument: "society should not deploy <technology-X> because *I* don't fully understand it, and I believe no one else does, either."

It's tempting to gloss over the epic significance of NIST's recent call for help on setting AI responsibility, safety, and trust metrics and standards. In this post, I explain why the new NIST forum will shape the future of trustworthy AI. diginomica.com/nist-responsib…

AI hallucinations makes sense no sense from a practical perspective, but that’s increasingly a reality we need to learn to navigate with the rise of generative AI and Large Language Models. diginomica.com/many-types-ai-…

Here’s the battery for the all-electric Mitsu-Bachi F110e race car. Actively cooled while it whirls through 10 laps of 1.5 minutes each. I understand a #RaspberryPi is the #edge device for the #Cumulocity #IoT platform that helps manage + optimize the vehicle. #ERAseries2022

So, I get off the train in #Brussels. Out of the corner of my eye I see someone that looks just like my old friend + industry colleague @eric_kavanagh. I go over. It’s him. He asks why I’m am here. I say @SoftwareAG event. He says: “Me too!” It’s game on for #DRAseries2022.
