The National Office of Clinical Audit (NOCA) recently published the Irish Heart Attack Audit for 2024, which highlighted a range of statistics and issues relating to occurrences of heart attack or ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI): d7g406zpx7bgk.cloudfront.net/x/6a3ef0adfe/i… In 2024, 36% of patients with a STEMI were current smokers, double the national average. These included 75% of confirmed STEMIs occurred were with men at a lower median age. Smoking is associated with an earlier onset of STEMI: on average, smokers present with a STEMI 11 years earlier than individuals who have never smoked. Among female smokers, this gap is even more pronounced, with women who are current smokers experiencing a STEMI approximately 13 years earlier than their non-smoking counterparts. Of those who were reported as current smokers in 2024 (n=584), 95% (n=553) received smoking cessation advice, which is an increase from 86% in 2023. Smoking cessation advice was given to male patients (n=418, 96%) at a slightly higher rate compared with female patients (n=135, 92%).These findings reinforce the well-established link between smoking and premature cardiovascular events, highlighting the importance of national initiatives such as the HSE Making Every Contact Count programme and the HSE QUIT plan.
