Some history for you…
**The Creation of Israel: An Injustice Born of European Guilt and Antisemitism**
The establishment of Israel in 1948 is often seen as a profound injustice to the Arab population of Palestine, who were made to bear the consequences of Europe’s centuries-long persecution of Jews. The land, inhabited predominantly by Arabs for over a millennium, was partitioned to create a Jewish state, despite Palestinians having no role in the antisemitism that drove the Zionist movement. Why, then, were Arabs forced to pay for Europe’s crimes?
Palestine, under Ottoman and later British rule, was home to a majority Arab population, with Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities coexisting. The late 19th century saw the rise of Zionism, a response to Europe’s relentless antisemitism—pogroms, expulsions, and, ultimately, the Holocaust, where six million Jews were murdered. This European catastrophe fueled the moral and political urgency for a Jewish homeland, with Palestine chosen for its historical and religious significance to Jews. Yet, the Arabs living there had no hand in these atrocities. The 1917 Balfour Declaration, issued by Britain, endorsed a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine, prioritizing Zionist aspirations over the rights of the Arab majority. As Jewish immigration surged under the British Mandate, tensions escalated. By 1947, Jews, despite owning just 7% of the land, were allocated 56% of Palestine under the UN Partition Plan—a decision driven by Western powers, particularly those grappling with post-Holocaust guilt. Palestinians rejected this as a violation of their self-determination, but their voices were drowned out by global powers. The 1948 war that followed Israel’s declaration of independence led to the Nakba, displacing over 700,000 Palestinians, cementing the sense of injustice.
Compounding this injustice, some European support for Zionism was driven by antisemitism. Figures like British politician Arthur Balfour and others saw Jewish emigration to Palestine as a convenient way to reduce Jewish populations in Europe, where they faced persistent discrimination. This “solution” aligned with colonial interests, allowing powers like Britain to deflect responsibility for their own antisemitism while controlling a strategic region. Palestinians, voiceless in a colonial framework, paid the price for both Europe’s guilt and its prejudice, as their homeland was reshaped by decisions beyond their control.

@theJeremyVine @Coventry_City @GaryLineker @alanshearer @MicahRichards @jjenas8 Agreed, the offside rule was never about millimetres, it should be if the attackers body is in line with the defender, looking on quite a general level, not millimetres. There have been so many goals ruled out with these stupid lines drawn across the pitch. It’s ruining the game.

I agree with this. #VAR destroyed the #FACupsemifinal. There was no “clear and obvious error” by the officials on the pitch and the 4-3 goal by heroic @Coventry_City should have stood. Instead of being remembered as one of the greatest FA Cup matches in history, it's yet another VAR washout. The offside rule was brought in to stop goalhanging, not to disallow a run by a striker whose big toe is further forward than the last defender. Absolutely gutting for everyone watching.
