WILD, BUT TRUE 🤯 Nolan McLean hit more homers (36) in college than Carson Benge (25). While Benge had more pitching strikeouts (79) than McLean (76). McLean takes the mound today for New York with Benge in RF!

Harris has a completely different approach to the draft than Avila. Just look at AA's last year compared to SH's first year: 2022 (AA): 18 college picks, 1 JuCo pick 2023 (SH): 11 college picks, 9 HS picks, 1 JuCo pick They've stuck with that approach since then too: 2024: 10 college picks, 8 HS picks, 3 JuCo picks 2025: 11 college picks, 7 HS picks, 3 JuCo picks

Solid second week of the season, with the team going 2-1 including 2 games against some of the top private schools in the state. In 12 plate appearances, I reached base 8 times, had two doubles, 5 runs scored and 3 RBIs. @FlatgroundBats @jakerobbins49 @JRudd_Scout @Baseball_FHS1

I really enjoyed "Before They Wore Dodger Blue: Tommy Lasorda and the Greatest Draft Class in Baseball History" by Eric Vickrey. Details how the Draft came about, how the @Dodgers assembled their 1968 class & how those players & Lasorda rose together. Lots of great anecdotes.

This is a well-researched (if depressing) article. Elbow problems in high school, and why they're biologically likely to happen, seem to be predictive. Getting past that window without one significantly improves your odds of making it to the Majors. Also this is yet another reason to avoid taking pitching (especially HS pitching) high in the draft. And even lower in the draft, there may be reason to avoid HS pitchers with an injury history because of the potential permanence of never fully recovering. Tigers might have to pivot their strategy here after taking chances on so many injured HS pitchers recently (River Hamilton, Andrew Dunford, Zach Swanson are recent examples). baseballamerica.com/stories/is-vel…

"Seventy percent of all ulnar collateral ligament injuries happen before age 20. More than half of injured professionals had elbow problems as kids. Surgery before age 20 cuts MLB odds in half compared to identical surgery performed later. Every year of injury-free development after first reaching meaningful velocity improves professional prospects by nearly a quarter."

Tigers are weak in minor league pitching depth... by design. You can't get hitters late in the draft but you can get pitchers. Tigers are maximizing the # of guys they get out of the draft by taking hitters high and pitchers low. See comments for more...
