A whole lot of gun control that shapes gun rights today only happened thanks to Winchester, Remington, S&W, SAAMI, Colt, etc. Wonder why US-made weapons in foreign countries can't be imported? It wasn't Obama's fault that you can't get those cheap M1 Carbines. Ever wonder why you can't buy US milsurp guns and ammo (aside from the trickle of guns the CMP is chartered to sell)? Why foreign milsurp is expensive and rare? Some of that stuff is really cheap in other countries! It wasn't moms demanding action who banned this. It was American gun companies, through every manner of shady lobbying they could attempt. Their initial goal was to ban *all* imported guns, commercial or military - something that antigunners today have proposed. These companies gave massive power to the ATF and other executive agencies - and these same agencies have used it against these companies since then. Much to the disdain of the companies, of course. If you're curious about this particular stain on the gun industry (and how it ended up giving us the GCA), "Deadly Business: Sam Cummings, Interarms, and the Arms Trade" is a great book on the history and the man who opposed it.
