🌐 NEW | Analysis: Global fossil power generation fell in March after Hormuz closure due to solar & wind growth ⚠️ Fall in gas-fired generation offset by large increases in solar & wind power, not coal w/CREA's @laurimyllyvirta energyandcleanair.org/fossil-power-f…

Exclusive from @DSanderson_85 Rachel Reeves has been accused of blocking £17.5 billion of investment in the North Sea after she shelved plans to scrap a windfall tax on oil and gas following the airstrikes on Iran Oil and gas companies have identified projects in the North Sea which could deliver the equivalent of more than a billion barrels of oil and gas by the end of the decade. They told the chancellor early last month that they were prepared to push ahead with the projects if the government brought forward plans to scrap the windfall tax, due to come to an end in 2030. Reeves was supportive of the plans at the time as she sought to bolster Britain’s economic growth. However, she then dropped them after oil and gas prices soared because of the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

The crisis in Iran shows us that we shouldn't drill in the North Sea. The quality of our politicians is execrable .

Britain now has some of the highest energy prices in the developed world, despite sitting on huge reserves of oil and gas. Why? Because we’ve pursued Net Zero at any cost, even though the UK produces less than 1% of global emissions. High energy costs drive manufacturing out of Britain. Businesses simply move somewhere cheaper often to China, where companies are heavily subsidised and able to undercut the global market. Meanwhile the United States has done the opposite. By using its own energy, including shale gas, it has driven costs down and brought industry back home. We could be doing the same: develop the North Sea, consider properly regulated fracking, and bring energy prices down. Instead, we’re refusing to use the resources beneath our own feet and our economy is paying the price.

Ed Miliband to approve first major North Sea gasfield project in decade #Echobox=1775165616" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

Now chancellor @RachelReevesMP agrees drilling in North Sea would generate tax revenue. So sack @Ed_Miliband the Cabinet eco fanatic & get on with it

Rachel Reeves opens rift with Miliband by backing North Sea drilling The chancellor said she was ‘very happy’ to back exploration at Rosebank oilfield and Jackdaw gasfield thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar… via @thetimes

Excellent news on Rosebank and Jackdaw. Let's crack on. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

The only way new North Sea drilling cuts energy bills is if the UK: – Nationalises the rigs – Bans exports – Sells at cost-price None of that is on the table. It will be sold on global markets to the highest bidder. Bills won’t move an inch.

Drilling for more oil & gas in the North Sea won't lower bills, it won't make us more energy independent and it won't insulate us from price shocks. A Labour backslide on this would be a huge betrayal. Double down on renewables. Insulate every home. Lower bills, permanently.
