“The Burial of Nadew Command”:  Looking back at the Battle of Afabet; by Shabait staff The scale and intensity of the battle quickly drew comparisons to some of the most consequential engagements of the twentieth century. Often described as the largest battle on the African continent since the Second Battle of El Alamein, it has also been likened to the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and the Battle of Kursk, conflicts in which decisive victories reshaped broader wars. Such comparisons underscore not only the magnitude of the confrontation but also the strategic consequences that followed. shabait.com/2026/03/21/the…

#Eritrea: Statement by Ambassador Sophia Tesfamariam at 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women; 19 March 2026 *"...The foundations of gender equality in Eritrea were not established solely through legislation, but were forged during the decades-long struggle for national liberation. Eritrean women participated in large numbers in the liberation movement, serving not only as fighters but also as educators, medics, logisticians, and community organizers". *"...Their contributions challenged deeply rooted social norms and demonstrated the central role women could play in shaping the destiny of their nation. This experience continues to inform Eritrea’s nation-building process and its enduring commitment to equality, participation, and social justice". shabait.com/2026/03/20/sta…

Ethiopia: Belligerent Agenda of Regional Destabilization; (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Research and Documentation Division) *"...Over the past two years, Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party (PP) regime has indulged in a reckless and insidious agenda of belligerence and destabilization against the State of Eritrea and the wider region. The hostile and unprovoked agenda has often been framed and rationalized in 'existential' terms; as the 'imperative for sovereign access to the sea' in the regime’s hyperbolic parlance". *"...The elusive and toxic agenda continues to be flaunted by invoking and recycling fallacious and revisionist historical narratives; alluding to demographic factors that revolve around Ethiopia’s relatively big and growing population size; as well as reciting abstract economic parameters and correlations that are at odds, and in contravention with, foundational pillars of international law". *"...From the foregoing chronology of events and facts, it is palpably clear that the PP regime’s misguided and deplorable agendas, which have no basis in law and history, are anathema to regional peace and stability. And while remaining committed to constructive regional engagement and peaceful cooperation, Eritrea, for its part, firmly rejects any claims or actions that infringe upon its sovereignty and territorial integrity in flagrant contravention of international law.  As underlined on various occasions in the past two years, the Government of Eritrea has no interest or appetite to engage in an acronymous agenda of conflict and turmoil.  It remains resolutely committed to peace, stability, and the responsible management of regional relations". shabait.com/2026/03/18/eth…

Good Read - Beyond the Resource Curse: #Eritrea’s Path to Sustainable Development; by Bana Negusse *"... Eritrea has established a clear regulatory and legal framework for the extractive sector that aligns with widely recognized international standards and draws on practices used in leading resource-producing countries. Within this framework, natural resources are viewed not as an end in themselves, but as one component of a broader national development strategy". *"...Importantly, Eritrea’s policies emphasize national ownership and fair returns from resource extraction, including royalties and equity participation in mining projects undertaken in partnership with international companies. Firms from a range of countries are involved in exploration and development activities, operating within a regulatory system that also places strict requirements on environmental protection and social impact". shabait.com/2026/03/16/bey…

The Potemkin Party's boringly sterile campaign of disinformation against Eritrea to rationalize its illicit and delusional agenda of "sovereign access to the sea" continues unabated by floating shifting ruses at different times. Revisionist history bordering on political blasphemy; bogus economic and trade arguments for "legitimizing" brazen breach of foundational international pillars on sovereignty and territorial integrity... etc. were invoked in the past two years ostensibly to hoodwink its domestic constituencies and garner some external support. When these gimmicks lost traction, the new ploy shifted to accusing Eritrea for "acts of regional destabilization" in order to re-package its irredentist and expansionist agendas in the language of "self-defence". These days, the new variant/mutation seems to revolve on falsely portraying Eritrea as a "malleable proxy" of extraneous forces with detrimental ramifications to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. Eritrea's celebrated and well-known policies on political independence and national dignity in its international relations; its principled and consistent stance on nurturing its multi-layered ties of cooperation with its international partners on the basis of symmetry and mutual interest that eschew structural dependency, are too well-known to merit a long discourse here. In the event, the PP's new ploy belie's its own track-record and innate proclivity to cater for external agendas that are not in consonance with the enduring interests and welfare of the nations and peoples of the Horn. x.com/hawelti/status…

Profile Q & A - “My Dream is to See #Eritrea Become the Biotech Country of Africa”:  An Interview with Dr. Medhanie Marikos Inspiring and visionary professional pledge to contribute to nation-building; a commendable pledge that epitomizes the Diaspora's established practices and unparalleled commitment to serve their nation and people in various ways. "...Like every Eritrean family, mine struggled for Eritrea’s independence. Since my youth, I have carried the dream of contributing my part to the nation-building process. This means bringing the scientific knowledge I gained in the U.S. back home to Eritrea and adapting it to help my fellow nationals grow. Every time I learn about the history of our struggle and the heavy price paid for it, I am inspired to replicate that same victory in science and technology by applying the iconic principles of self-reliance, dedication, and sacrifice. Ultimately, my dream is to see Eritrea become the Biotech country of Africa". shabait.com/2026/03/12/my-…

#Eritrea held a dynamic #CSW70 side event at UNHQ today, drawing a packed room for a productive dialogue on: “Eritrea’s Commitment to Empowering Women and Girls through Legal Reforms, Awareness Campaigns and Targeted Initiatives.” The event highlighted Eritrea’s approach to advancing women’s access to justice through inclusive, community-based institutions, focusing on practical lessons from #Eritrea’s justice system, particularly the role of community courts in delivering grassroots-level equity.   It also reaffirmed Eritrea’s firm commitment to championing legal frameworks that deliver justice and dignity to all women and girls. And further underscored that, since Independence, #Eritrea has embedded gender equality within its legal and institutional framework. Legal equality forms the foundation for women’s full participation in economic, social, and political life.   Key legal reforms include:   ⚖️ Proclamation 1/1991 – Abolishes sex-based discrimination 🪪 Nationality Proclamation 21/1992 – Equal citizenship rights 🌱 Land Proclamation 58/1994 – Equal access to land 🤝 National Service Proclamation 82/1995 – Equal civic participation 🗳️ Proclamation 86/1996 – 30% reserved seats for women in regional parliaments & equal candidacy for all seats 💼 Labor Proclamation 118/2001 – Workplace protections 🚫 Proclamation 158/2007 – Criminalization of FGM 🏡 Proclamation 2/1991 (Art. 45 & 46) – Equality in family planning & household management 💍 Civil Code of Eritrea (Art. 636) – Rights to mutual respect & regard in intimate partnerships ⚖️ Penal Code of Eritrea (Art. 4) – Right to equality before the law   Moreover, community courts in #Eritrea have expanded women’s participation:   - Currently, women represent approximately 37% of community court judges nationwide. They also serve as public prosecutors and judges at higher levels of the judiciary. - Each community court typically consists of three elected judges, including at least one woman, ensuring women’s perspectives are represented in local dispute resolution. - This increased participation strengthens gender equality within institutions and enhances community confidence in the justice system. - Key actors driving this progress include the Ministry of Justice @MoJ_Eritrea , the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, the National Union of Eritrean Women @NUEWEritrea , and local administrations. All working to advance women’s empowerment and legal awareness.   🇪🇷

Profile Q & A - “Medicine is my Duty; Writing is my therapy”: An Interview with Dr. Ruth Ghirmay; by Kidane Shimendi Words of wisdom and inspiration: *"...Personally, March 8 is a testament to the endurance of the Eritrean woman. In my field, I witness women’s strength during the most vulnerable and powerful moments of life—childbirth. I see them as the primary healers and educators of our society. Even Broken Wings Fly is dedicated to that very spirit of overcoming". *"...As a practitioner in obstetrics and gynecology, March 8 is deeply personal to me. OPINTION AND ANALYSIS International Women’s Day 2026: Eritrean Women and Leadership Across Generations By Nahla Valji, UN Resident Coordinator in Eritrea *"...Eritrea’s history demonstrates clearly that women are central to national resilience. Their participation during the liberation struggle reflected a principle later affirmed globally through Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security: sustainable peace requires women’s full and meaningful participation". *"...As UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, I have had the privilege of meeting women who carried Eritrea through conflict and women now shaping its future. The continuity with the past and the resilience and strength derived from it are unmistakable". shabait.com/2026/03/07/int…

Profile Q & A - “Our Challenges Were Our Best Teachers”: An Interview with Major Ghebremesqel Ghebregergish (“Fire”); by Kidane Shimendi Amazing stories of heroism, resourcefulness and innovation of the EPLF's Department of Transport as graphically illustrated in these snippets: "*...It was in 1977. The EPLF captured the Soviet-made T-55 tank for the first time when freedom fighters hit its fuel tanker during the intensive battle for the liberation of Asmara in the village of Adem-Zemat. The freedom fighters, in their resourcefulness, extinguished the fire using soil and mud to preserve the tank for the revolution". *"...Initially, we called the tank 'Abrehet', but it was later renamed 'Commander Number 1' and was heroically sacrificed during the Fenkil operation. Nowadays, when I visit Massawa and see that tank displayed as a monument, I become emotional, remembering that historical moment when people celebrated its capture". *"...All of the Department’s work was transformational and memorable. But if you insist, I can recall two examples. First, we modified a shida-making machine. We manufactured a lifting spring system that made it easy to transport the machine by vehicle in combat situations. Second, there were the 130mm artillery pieces captured during the defeat of the Nadew Command. These weapons were difficult to maneuver over difficult terrains, so we enabled their transport atop Mercedes trucks, ensuring the timely arrival to their destinations". shabait.com/2026/03/06/our…

#Eritrea: Rich Tapestry of Rashaida Culture; by Mussie Efriem "The adoption of modern technology has not diminished the cultural soul of the Rashaida; rather, it has created a unique hybrid lifestyle where the ancient and the modern coexist. Today, it is common to see automobiles parked alongside nomadic tents, used for speedy transport across the rugged terrain of the Northern Red Sea and Gash Barka regions. Despite the efficiency of the motor vehicle, the camel remains the undisputed protagonist of Rashaida life. This persistence of the camel in the face of modernization serves as a profound statement of cultural resilience. In the vast plains, the camel remains the most reliable actor for navigating the deep desert. By choosing to maintain their herds alongside their vehicles, the Rashaida demonstrate that true modernization does not require the abandonment of heritage". shabait.com/2026/03/06/the…
