Gaziantep is one of the world’s largest carpet production centers. Workers in factories exporting to Europe and the United States are losing fingers, hands and arms. But these accidents often remain invisible. Because under intense production pressure, employers systematically violate even the most basic safety measures. And after these amputations happen, the cases are quietly buried. BİRTEK-SEN President Mehmet Türkmen is in prison today for saying exactly this. In speeches he gave in Gaziantep’s Başpınar Organized Industrial Zone, Türkmen spoke publicly about workplace deaths, amputations and the rights violations workers face every day. Shortly after, his home was raided, his electronics were confiscated and he was arrested under the accusation of “publicly disseminating misleading information.” But what exists here is not “misinformation.” It is an extremely brutal reality.
