At High Tech High Chula Vista, entrepreneurship isn't just taught — it's lived. What started as an honors biology project by Diego Marquez has grown into Cup O Diem, a student-run coffee bar operating on campus every single school day. The name says it all: Cup O Diem comes from carpe diem — seize the day — and that's exactly what these students are doing. Diego, now a senior, built the business from the ground up. He purchased the coffee machine, developed the concept, and turned a classroom project into a real, revenue-generating operation. As it grew, he did what any entrepreneur would do: he hired. First, he brought on Karla's brother as a junior. Then came Karla Gaytan, now in 9th grade, who joined the team and stepped into her very first job. Every morning from 7:35 to 8:40 AM, Karla and her team run the stand — taking orders, greeting customers, managing operations, and learning what it means to balance work and school simultaneously. For Karla, this isn't just coffee. It's her first real experience with leadership, communication, and professional responsibility. This happens all before first period. But Cup O Diem is about more than hustle. The business is built with community and sustainability at its core. They use organic beans and organic milk, compost all coffee grounds, and have even invested in café chairs to create a welcoming, comfortable space where every student feels safe and at home. They are still paying off the machine — a real-world lesson in business investment and long-term thinking. This is what HTH Chula Vista does differently. Students aren't waiting until college or adulthood to become entrepreneurs — they're doing it now, in the hallways, before the school day even begins. From a biology project to a thriving small business, passed from a senior to a junior to a freshman sibling, Cup O Diem is proof that when young people are trusted with real responsibility, they rise to meet it. High Tech High Chula Vista students launched their internship journey with Internship Interview Day, where community and business mentors met with juniors and helped match them with meaningful, real-world placements. Every February, High Tech High Chula Vista students walk into their first-ever professional interview — nervous, uncertain, but ready to show up. Through resume workshops, mock interviews, and a "dress for success" session, students like Jennifer Pak and Cyrus Estrada arrive prepared. And they leave with something even more valuable than interview experience: self-awareness, confidence, and a clearer vision of their future. Community partners come to campus to conduct real interviews and offer real feedback — many going on to host students for five-week internships in May. As Internship Coordinator Yoli Soler puts it: "It's adults showing their faith in our students and mentoring them to become the best leaders in our community." For these students, Internship Interview Day isn't just a requirement. Showing up for our students is what our mentors do — but showing up for the whole community? When @firstroboticscalifornia put out the call, our team didn't think twice. This season, 9 of our mentors are filling 24 volunteer roles across multiple official FRC events. And that's before counting our alumni, parents, and students who are out there too. If your team has someone with a little extra bandwidth this season — send them out. In December, five HTH teachers participated in a two-week international professional learning experience in Shanghai, hosted and fully funded by the UNESCO Teacher Education Centre at Shanghai Normal University. In partnership with the High Tech High Graduate School of Education, HTH educators designed and led an interdisciplinary project at a local school—bringing project-based learning to life across cultures. This global collaboration reflects HTH’s commitment to learning by doing, educator growth, and sharing innovative practices worldwide. High Tech High Chula Vista is inviting professional mentors to participate in its 2026 Internship Interview Day on Wednesday, February 4th, from 9:00am to 12:00pm at their campus (1945 Discovery Falls Drive). This event kicks off a five-week, full-time academic internship running from April 27th to May 29th, where 11th-grade students immerse themselves in the professional world for 30–40 hours per week. Mentors, who must hold a college degree and not be related to the student, will guide interns as they co-design a professional project, conduct interviews, and document their experience through a photo journal.
