No community should have to live in fear of violence, especially in their house of worship. The attack on Temple Israel in Michigan today is a painful reminder of why we must continue to call out antisemitism and all forms of hate, together.

Today was incredibly special. For this year’s Second District Black History Month Award Presentation, I had the privilege of honoring Freedom Riders and Second District residents Dr. Robert Singleton and Helen Singleton. The Singletons are civil rights leaders who demonstrated extraordinary courage and strength as college students more than 60 years ago when they volunteered to become Freedom Riders—risking their lives to challenge segregation in interstate travel. Arrested in Jackson and incarcerated at Mississippi State Penitentiary alongside more than 400 other Freedom Riders, their actions exposed ongoing injustice and demanded accountability. Their bravery helped prompt U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to petition the Interstate Commerce Commission to issue national regulations prohibiting discrimination in interstate travel. The Freedom Ride was just the beginning of a lifetime of making an impact, especially here in Los Angeles. It was an absolute honor to be joined by the Singletons, their family, and the many individuals whose lives have been directly touched by their leadership and unwavering commitment to freedom. As we commemorate 100 years of Black history, let us look to the wisdom and boldness of the Singletons as a powerful example of what it means to take action—and recommit ourselves to doing the work to create new possibilities for future generations, just as they have done for us.

Today marks 84 years since Executive Order 9066 was issued by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt, authorizing the U.S. military to forcibly remove more than 120,000 adults and children of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast to 10 major incarceration camps and other detention sites. Remembering this history is essential as we continue fighting ongoing attacks and threats of erasure targeting our immigrant communities. To learn more about the unjust incarceration of Japanese Americans, visit the LA County Library website for a curated list of recommended books: lacountylibrary.org/japanese-ameri… Swipe to learn more about the Japanese American National Museum’s Day of Remembrance event, “The Power of Action: Silence Today, Injustice Tomorrow,” taking place on Saturday, February 21.

Exciting progress on the Harbor–UCLA Medical Center Replacement Program! 🏥 As the only Level 1 Trauma Center serving the South Bay and South Central LA communities, Harbor-UCLA treats 4,500+ trauma patients each year. The new, state-of-the-art hospital—set to open by 2028—will transform the 72-acre campus to meet growing healthcare needs in West Carson and beyond. Last year, I joined LA County Public Works, the Department of Health Services, hospital leadership, and the construction team to celebrate the steel topping out. With a workforce made up of 50% women and local hires, this project is powering ahead. Watch the video to meet the incredible team behind this effort! 🎥

Today, we lost a champion for civil rights with the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson. For several decades, Rev. Jackson was at the forefront of the fight for equity, voting rights, and access to jobs, health care, and education. His lifelong commitment to activism created pathways for countless leaders. Rev. Jackson was also committed to supporting communities in Los Angeles. During the 1992 uprising following the Rodney King verdict, he was among the leaders advocating for nonviolence and community rebuilding. Through his organization, Rainbow PUSH Coalition, he pushed for diverse hiring and expanded contracting opportunities in Los Angeles. Thank you, Rev. Jackson, for your pioneering leadership. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Jackson family.

When girls are seen, supported, and equipped, there’s no limit to what they can achieve. It was an honor to join the 40 young women who are part of the inaugural cohort for the Holly J. Mitchell Girls Empowerment Leadership Institute this morning at Mount St. Mary's Doheny Campus, where we provided them with iPads to support their growth and learning as they embark on their leadership journey.
