Celebrating Global Excellence in Groundwater Science Prof Abhijit Mukherjee, Professor at the Department of Geology and Geophysics and the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, @IITKgp, has been conferred the prestigious Groundwater Excellence Award by the International Association of Hydrogeologists – Indian National Chapter (INC). This distinguished honour, awarded annually to a scientist for outstanding contributions to groundwater research, recognises Prof. Mukherjee’s sustained and impactful work in the domain of groundwater science and its sustainable management. The award was conferred by the President of IAH-INC, who also serves as Vice President of IAH-Asia, following the recommendation of a three-member jury. With headquarters in the United Kingdom and a presence in 135 countries, IAH is the world’s largest association of groundwater professionals. Recognition from its Indian National Chapter is one of the highest accolades in the field in the country. Globally acclaimed for his pioneering research in groundwater pollution, Prof. Mukherjee’s contributions have significantly advanced understanding and policy discourse in environmental sustainability. His illustrious career is marked by numerous national and international honours, including the National Geoscience Award (2014) and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (2020). Notably, he is the first Indian to be elected as a Fellow of both the Geological Society of America and the American Geophysical Union.
