@Skramerwrites Curaçao’s federation feels pretty confident they’ll get to play in qualifiers, apparently. It’s only a big deal if they qualify tho

In 2024, Curaçao and Aruba entered into a partnership to explore the possibility of forming a single team for the World Baseball Classic independent of The Netherlands team. If they were to get approval from WBCI, they could play together in WBC qualifiers

Here’s a non pay wall version of Curaçao aiming for their own team to try and qualify for the next World Baseball Classic. The move is supported by hall of fame inductee Andruw Jones, who managed The Netherlands at this year’s WBC. nu.cw/2026/03/18/cur…

@EdwardCaroLopez Their federation have their eyes set on the next qualifiers as well. I think the amount of teams in the qualifiers will go up. With record revenue and viewership in the WBC, hopefully they take that money and invest in bringing an additional 8 teams for WBCQ.

More African representation in the qualifiers is needed. Would love to see Uganda there someday. A strong showing for Uganda at the pre-Olympic qualifying African championship this year or next would definitely help their case

@Brujomujo I think to get NPB on board to pause their season, they’d probably have to give them some assurance that they’d host games again come 2033 or so.

@INTLBaseball24 Only thing I don’t like about this is it almost guarantees we’d never see a country outside North America host a final or semi final.

@dickenzy182107 They could but the weather has been a little so-so in the past. USA/Japan semifinals in 2017 had some rain. When they can avoid potential weather issues, they generally like to do that

@INTLBaseball24 serious question: why couldnt do Dodger Stadium in March? They used to do Petco Park.

@LordsBaron NPB and KBO would absolutely shut down for the WBC. They’ve done it for the Olympics and this is a bigger deal than that. MLB teams by rule cannot actually stop a player with insurance from competing. It is ultimately the player’s decision.

@INTLBaseball24 So you gonna shut down the KBO and NPL? You gonna tell all of those owners they don’t get that revenue anymore? Also, you think a team a game out of first place in July is sending ANYONE? Mid-season makes it into just corny sideshow.

@LordsBaron The current time is NOT perfect. At all. Almost every single team has lost a significant amount of players due to spring training. Mexico, a semifinalist from 2023, was decimated by absences. There are absolutely other sports in this window.

@INTLBaseball24 It would be silly and filled with logistical issues. The current start time is perfect, acting like a beam of sunlight after the long winter, there are no other sports in that window and it’s a tasty appetizer to fire people up for opening day. There is no reason to change it

@EWRNYC1 They would make much more money with a summer WBC. MEX/USA easily would draw well over 50,000 people and especially with great weather. Miami has been a great host but is also one of the smallest venues of MLB stadiums. MLB would love the championship round in NY

@INTLBaseball24 I’d imagine MLB would want Yankee Stadium, Citi Field, Fenway, Wrigley Field to host WBC games and none of those locations would be ideal in March. Also July could lead to way more neutral fans attending games considering there are no other major events that time of year.

@jasondaniels00 I still have some doubts this happens. WBSC stone walled them for the qualifiers in 2025 because they don’t have an Olympic committee. Good chance that happens again for the next one. Playing as Aruba gives them a little better shot at playing for a team not named NL

@INTLBaseball24 This has been in the making for some time. The Netherlands and Curaçao have basically gone their own ways for the past 7-8 years. Whichever team(s) enters future tournaments they’ll need a lot more pitching.

@jasondaniels00 To some degree but the best Curaçao players outside of MLB have stuck with NL for basically all competitions. If Aruban players were to go with Curaçao, they’d have some really good pitching in a WBC with the Kelly brothers along with Cijntje being the top Curaçao arm

@mlakustiak14 Already qualified. Curaçao would have to battle through the qualifiers. If they don’t qualify, they’d still be eligible to play for The Netherlands. CW tried to play in last qualifiers but were stone walled. So, no guarantee this even happens.

@MarcelloZu31267 Curaçao and Aruba’s federation have an agreement to form their own team for a potential WBCQ. Would more or less be a revival of the old Netherlands Antilles under a different name but they face an uphill battle cause it would could weakenone of the top European squads

@MarcelloZu31267 They do not. They’ve been applying with the IOC to get one for recent summer Olympics but no luck so far. Aruba has an Olympic committee and players from Curaçao and Sint Maarten can play for Aruba. So, in theory they could play under the Aruban flag if MLB/WBSC approves of them

@JLMaria_ Curaçao would like to play under their own flag but do not have an Olympic committee and that has been a big hurdle to get their own team for the WBC. Aruba does not have the same problem. Aruba and Curaçao entered into a partnership to form their own team one day

@INTLBaseball24 If that happens, what would be the difference with playing under the Netherlands flag? 🤣 Each Aruban and Curaçaoan should play under their own flag...even those federations are affiliated to WBSC.

Players from Aruba and Sint Maarten would be eligible to represent Curaçao. There is a possibility that Curaçao could play under the Aruban flag. This has been in the works for about 5 years but clear hurdles remain with MLB and WBSC

@PoebelVox They have already agreed to work together. Arubans have already played for the Curaçao national team. It’s certainly possible they would form a team but nothing is certain while they wait for approval

@INTLBaseball24 Why would Aruba play for Curaçao? That’d be like Scotland playing for England. Either they are separate countries in the kingdom, or they are not. But they are not separate, together
