While steps such as sanctions are a welcome starting point, they fall short of delivering justice. Tamil victims and survivors have consistently called for full accountability, and their demands make clear that international action cannot stop here.

This approach allowed the campaign to move fluidly through diplomatic spaces, sparking conversations and engaging new audiences. It helped ensure that calls for justice remained visible.

Arrest the General #2 🧵 In 2018, the ITJP worked with Tamil diaspora organisations and Communications and Branding agency @T_E_M_P_L_O to develop a bold advocacy campaign for the UN Human Rights Council, calling attention to allegations against Sri Lankan General Shavendra Silva and demanding accountability for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Gen. Shavendra Silva was finally sanctioned by the UK in 2025 - but it cannot stop there. He must be prosecuted and held fully accountable for his crimes; without this, the entrenched culture of impunity in Sri Lanka will continue unchecked.

Together, we helped ensure these crimes could not be ignored, amplifying the call for justice on an international stage.

Arrest the General Campaign #1 🧵 In 2018, the ITJP led an impactful joint campaign at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, calling for the sanctioning and arrest of Sri Lankan General Shavendra Silva, who allegedly committed war crimes and crimes against humanity during the armed conflict in Sri Lanka.

The continued lack of justice and accountability for the Navy’s past crimes has entrenched a culture of impunity, not only within the Navy, but across all of Sri Lanka’s security forces. The NPP government has a duty to ensure genuine accountability, and the international community must push for it.

For at least five years, during and after the war, scores of people were illegally detained and brutally tortured there.

Yet, to this day, there has been no meaningful justice or accountability. Survivors and families are still waiting for truth, while those responsible remain unpunished.
