My name is Colin and I am a freelance mathematician. That means you can hire me to solve the kind of problem you've been avoiding. Email colin@colinbeveridge.co.uk and let's see what we can figure out.

@IMcMillan I thought I'd spotted a collection of artists from York in the mirror, but it was just a wardrobe.

Hello! My name is Colin and I am a mathematician. Happy birthday to Ludwig van Beethoven; I was once asked in a radio quiz for his forenames and was genuinely baffled when the "correct" jingle played because I'd only given three.

Hello! My name is Colin and I am a mathematician. Today is the birthday of Admiral Grace Hopper, one of the architects of COBOL and hence of modern computing. If you've got code nobody understands, that you're scared to touch in case it breaks, give me a shout. Maybe I can help.

It's remarkable the degree to which me posting "don't let Nazis into your community" is causing people to project their anxieties about politics and community on me. Yes I understand that you come from a country with broken politics. I do too. Community management still matters.

@reflectivemaths @cjshore Radical suggestion: how about you eat the bread the way you like to eat it, and everybody else eat the bread they like, and boom! everybody's happy?

@icecolbeveridge @_Manuel_Ruiz_ @jamestanton To be able to draw without lifting and without going over the same path, the figure must have Euler cycle (all even crossing) or Euler Path (Exactly 2 odd crossings). Touching or intersecting circles will always produce even crossing (in a side/vertex polygon view)

CLASSIC: Can a picture of intersecting and/or just touching circles always be retraced without lifting your pencil from the page?

Hello! My name is Colin and I am a mathematician. Today is the anniversary of the first Calvin and Hobbes strip. While in my heart I identify as both, I know that in reality I'm the perplexed dad. Let me know if I can help turn a problem from Calvinball into a snowball fight.

@nathanday314 @reflectivemaths I feel like there's something along those lines in Tufte, but it's in a different room and I have a dog on me. I'll try to check tomorrow.

Stem and Leaf diagrams. What's the point? Does anyone have ANY examples of these being used in any real situation outside of a textbook or maths exam? #CoreMaths

@icecolbeveridge I don't completely hate the "if you're going to make a mark on the chart, it might as well be a meaningful one" but still don't think this is a good chart. There are plenty of good stats things to do before resorting to mechanics!

Hello! My name is Colin and I am a mathematician. Today is the birthday of Martha Annie Whiteley. Someone commented on my "Mathematicians for Equality" badge yesterday; Whiteley fought for the recognition of women in chemistry in the early 1900s. Science is for everyone.
