Trump's win shows us who we really are: This article by professor Aaron W. Hughey is one of the most powerful and accurate post-election indictments of America you'll ever read. 😳👇

Wall Street may be breathing a sigh of relief at Scott Bessent’s nomination, but working people see no help coming their way. Bessent’s expertise is helping rich investors make more money, not cutting costs for families squeezed by corporate profiteering.

This veto message from @NC_Governor is 🔥and 💯 spot on! My Republican colleagues are violating the constitution, undermining the will of the voters, and exacting political retribution cloaked in disaster relief. Shameful.

I've been involved in winning presidential races and races that lost. One common thread is that everyone seems to have a reason why you won or lost which usually reflects a personal perspective or agenda. So here's mine: I think VP Harris ran a very good campaign that operated at a high level. She had a great convention, crushed Trump in a debate, and put on a series of big event rallies that were the best I'd ever seen. As a Republican operative, I spent years pointing out flaws in the Democratic Party and I'm not here to say it doesn't need to go through a period of questioning and self-reflection. Those are much larger questions than one election and one campaign. But the Republican party is an anti-democratic movement, attacking the pillars of American democracy from elections to the judicial system. I understand those who say that if there had been a "normal" Democratic primary, the results would have been better. Maybe. But think about it. In modern political history, every time a sitting VP has run for the nomination, that VP has won. Perhaps it would have been different this time and the eventual nominee would have emerged stronger for the process. But more likely there would have been a bloody primary fight that left the nominee broke and trying to patch together a fractured party to face a Republican party that has become Donald Trump's party. In all probability, VP Harris would have won that primary and been in a weakened and vulnerable position when it was finally resolved in May or June. I would say to my Democratic friends to go through this post-election process with open minds and hearts but never doubt that the Democratic party is the only pro-democracy party in America. No one will have a position in Trump's administration who is not an election denier adhering to the Big Lie. That's toxic to a country's sense of self and the damage will take a generation to repair, if it is possible to heal. Losing an election does not mean that you were wrong and they were right. It means you lost an election. I grew up in Mississippi watching my parents back candidates opposed to segregation. When those candidates lost, and they did for a long time, my parents didn't question if they were on the right side. They didn't ask themselves if the majority who supported segregation had proven the justness of their cause by winning. The mid-terms start after the Super Bowl. It will likely be a good election for Democrats and then the 2028 presidential race will be upon us. After a loss, the days seem long but the months will pass quickly. Reflect, rest up, but come back prepared to fight. Fight not because victory is assured but fight because not to fight is to give up. And if we do that, we no longer deserve to call ourselves Americans. Read less

30 years ago this month, I gave a speech warning of a two-tiered society composed of a few winners and a larger group of Americans left behind, whose anger and whose disillusionment could be easily manipulated. We're seeing the ramifications of this yet again.

It’s going to take time to sort through what happened Tuesday. But I've read a lot of takes the past few days (some good, many bad), and I've had a lot of people ask how I won one of the toughest districts in the country by over 13%. Here are some thoughts: 🧵

For the 10s of millions of people struggling in not only this economy, but this economic system, there is nothing coming from the democratic establishment to be excited for. People are very unhappy with the economy. Not just the price of eggs. They don't just want a moderate, means-tested tax break for a narrow circumstance. They want actual change. With specifics. They want a vision. Like what? A vision to abolish poverty wholesale. That's exciting. A space race to shift to renewables right now. That is exciting. Demilitarization - no more religious crusades - and instead providing healthcare and parental leave, and radically improving standards of living for all our citizens is exciting. Challenging. And exciting. Overhauling our education system and a digital bill of rights is exciting. Breaking up monopolies from communications to food to pharmaceuticals, to banking, to manufacturing to publishing, to streaming entertainment, and music, would be very, very exciting. And address the very real feeling we all have that in every industry, we are getting screwed. That is what we need to defeat the right-wing "burn it all down" movement. We need a vision that lights us up. That's the billion stars we need to see in the sky. Otherwise we'll keep getting the corporate stock photo image of democracy, that isn't democracy at all. Not even close. In fact, it pisses a lot of people off. Democracy means people rule. And that in its essence means humanity rules. The species -- but also the quality of humanitas -- ethics, compassion, dignity. Without a democracy, the people will turn to something else.

So when Trump fires all non-partisan career professionals in government, replaces them with radical loyalists within every nook and cranny of the US government, and adds radical judges everywhere. And every one of you that voted for him finally wake up from your fucked up fantasy just like the folks that woke up after 4 years of the last shit show, only to realize it’s much much worse, and much more permanent, this time. When the cancer you caused has infected every bit of the American system and it can’t be unwound for a lifetime. What then? Do you beg this country for forgiveness for choosing fascism because you were conned into believing your eggs are too expensive because of Joe Biden? You just put Steve Bannon in charge of American policy. You just put Michael Flynn in charge of our military. You just put Alex Jones in charge of media and propaganda. You just put Stephen Miller in charge of immigration policy. You just put batshit crazy RFK Jr. in charge of health policy. You just killed free public education and privatized schools, which you will have to pay for. You just sealed the deal on a national abortion ban, because you’re demented if you think it’s not coming. You just radicalized the Supreme Court for a generation. You just made women less safe and less free. You just made this country an oligarchy with the billionaires quite literally in charge now. You just put in office the one person that believes a president is a king, with the fucking Supreme Court ruling to prove it in his back pocket! You just ushered in Fascism. Because your cereal costs more. Congratulations.

The thing about leopards is eventually they will eat you too. Your favorite local restaurant closing because the nice family who owns it getting deported. You thought they were some of the “good ones.” The price of produce skyrocketing even before the camps are built as immigrants flee. Your daughter dying of sepsis because the lawyers feel it’s too risky to perform that D&C. No more FAFSA for your kids college because you didn’t know that was part of the Department of Education. Veterans having their benefits cut because they rolled back the PACT Act as too expensive. That factory in town that was going to build chips and employ your kids never breaking ground because of the repeal of the CHIPs act. The bridge that was going to cut your commute in half being canceled because of the repeal of the Infrastructure Act. That sweet government job that you’ve loved because you can work 8 hours a day and fish on the weekends has been slated for a MAGA Schedule F slot because it controls funding for contracts that will go to Republican donors, so you’re fired without cause or any union protections. You’ll blame Biden or the local Democrats probably. But it will be fine because Elon promised it would be uncomfortable at first but it will get better. You were just so sure it would be uncomfortable for…you know…”those people.” Not you. But that’s leopards for you. They eat whatever is available.

Everybody keep your heads up. This isn’t forever, and after America gets a taste of what it voted for, there will likely be a massive backlash. There will be lots of time to come, and I’m still in the trenches with you. Just going to take a bit longer.

Was it racism? Was it sexism? The people voted and they voted for a liar, cheat, criminal, and someone who does not care about them. They voted against their own self interest. Fifty percent of this country just voted against our Democracy. I have disdain for that. I am today not proud to be an American. Today, I will struggle to stand for our anthem. I love America, but I am disgusted by those who could vote for this. I will move on and live my life, away from social media and the reality of this outcome. I feel sorry for those who voted for this outcome and actually thought this was going to work out well for them.
