I’m genuinely glad I was born in the ’90s. The games we played actually made you think. They forced you to figure things out on your own. I used to play Pokémon on the Game Boy Color all the time. In some of those games, there were caves so dark you couldn’t see unless you taught a Pokémon the HM move Flash. I always thought it was a waste to carry a Pokémon just for that move, and I could never remember to pick it up anyway. So I finally said, “Forget it—it’s a long drive anyway.” (We were traveling a lot back then) Instead of going back for Flash, I came up with a plan to get through the cave without it. I stayed close to the walls and moved slowly. If I noticed a strange pattern or a break in the wall, I’d stop and feel my way around. It was frustrating, and maybe a little stubborn, but I made it through the entire dark cave without ever using Flash. I was nine years old, and that was the first time I remember telling myself, “I’ll figure it out.” That persistence—the keep-trying mentality—felt real back then.
