All those selfies and cat videos have to get stored somewhere...and that somewhere is in data centers. 🤳 So how can we sustainably power these power hungry developments? A collaboration between InnerSpace and the Rhodium Group found that next-generation #geothermal energy could economically power up to 64% of the data centers expected to be built within the next 10 years in the United States. It could also power 100% of data centers in 13 of the 15 biggest data center markets. 🔥 You can read the full report here: rhg.com/wp-content/upl… #energy #hyperscale #ai #datacenters

New Mexico’s #geothermal potential is so vast that there’s at least one viable geothermal application in every county. Across the state, citizens and corporations can use the heat underground for power generation, heating and cooling buildings, and industrial process heating needs. ❄️ 🏭 ⚡ Want to learn more? The agricultural industry is well-positioned to use #geothermal heat. That’s because food processing often has a demand for near-constant, but relatively low-temperature heat. This puts the industry in a sweet spot for geothermal utilization. 🧁 Case in point: There are many dairy processing companies around the world that use geothermal heat for pasteurization. And this can save big bucks. In Klamath Falls Oregon, a shallow 233 meter geothermal well replaced a natural gas boiler and saved the company an estimated $76,000 a year in fuel costs. 🐄 A number of breweries in the United States also use geothermal power to heat boilers full of mash, a key step in making beer. Cheers to that! 🍻 Geothermal #heat is also good for drying food products—an energy-intensive process due to the high moisture in agricultural products like spices, cereals, and fruit. 🫑 In fact, geothermal heat can be used for a wide variety of applications across the entire agricultural production spectrum - from seedling to processing. There are aquaculture farms that use geothermally heated water for fish. 🐟 And there are fruit and vegetable companies that use geothermal to warm their greenhouses. 🚜 Want to dig further into how geothermal heat can help supercharge agricultural production? Thanks to geothermal’s abundant and ubiquitous #heat, the energy source has the potential to dramatically change the way industrial companies produce the things that make the world go round. 🌏 The industrial sector produces 23% of all carbon emissions in the US. A lot of that comes from burning fuel for heat. Recently, there have been efforts to electrify industrial process heat to eliminate these emissions, efforts that if successful would strain an already overloaded grid, and simply switch the source of emissions from the industrial site to nearby power plants. Enter #geothermal. 🔥 A whopping 50% of global energy demand is heat. Heat for buildings, industrial and agricultural processes. And guess what geothermal is? It's heat. Seems obvious right? The IEA, in collaboration with Project InnerSpace in the "Future of Geothermal Energy" report, found that 35% of industrial heat demand is for temperatures below 200°C. That amount of geothermal resource exists at relatively shallow depths in most places in the world - making it low hanging fruit to power industrial processes and progress. 🍒 *Abundant, around-the-clock heat *Heat generated at or near the point of use *Low and predictable operating costs *Low to no emissions For a deeper dive on the prospect of geothermal has a solution for all things heat, see the full report below: 2035initiative.com/unlocking-next… #energy #industry #innovation

Much like the agriculture industry, the timber and paper industries run on steam-based processes for preparing wood products, meaning they're perfect candidates to use #geothermal heat. 🌲 Currently, the timber and paper industries burn oil, gas, and biomass, typically in the form of waste wood products, to heat boilers and produce steam for drying. If wood and paper processing companies were to switch from these sources to geothermal heat, they'd drastically cut their emissions, while insulating themselves from price volatility. 📄 Enter New Zealand’s Kawerau cluster, the world’s largest wood processing facility and a poster child for how this should work. In 2021, Oji Fibre Solutions ditched coal for geothermal in one of their boilers, saving $4 million in energy costs while keeping 10,000-28,000 tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere. Not a bad trade-off. 💰 Essity’s tissue paper plant tapped into the same geothermal steam from the Kawerau wood processing for its drying needs, invested $20 million in 2024, and cut CO2 emissions by 66%. 🧻 Geothermal heat works for industrial processes. Kawerau proved it —now the race is on to see how fast we can scale. Let's go! 🔥 For a deeper dive on the impact of geothermal in meeting the needs of industrial heat users, see the full report below. 2035initiative.com/unlocking-next… #geothermal #energy #heat #innovation

Did you know: The chemical processing industry requires huge amounts of heat. Currently, oil, gas, coal, or biomass is burned in a boiler to produce process heat, which is used to create all the products we enjoy in our lives - from plastics to timber to pharmaceuticals to everyday beauty products. 💄 And speaking of beauty products - these industries are prime candidates for a geothermal makeover. The payoff? Escape from volatile fuel costs while slashing emissions—it's a win-win that even makes financial sense. Case in point: Janssen Pharmaceutica in Belgium (an arm of Johnson & Johnson's pharmaceutical business) made the switch to geothermal heating. Now they're pumping 85°C water through their facility for space heating and pharmaceutical development, cutting emissions by 30% in the process. 🏭 But here's where it gets really interesting: Those geothermally heated fluids pumping through the geothermal systems can contain valuable dissolved minerals like lithium, boron, and iodine. Suddenly, geothermal isn't just about energy that can save operators money—it's about opening entirely new revenue streams. 🔋 InnerSpace was proud to support this work by 2035 Initiative to deep dive into the impact of geothermal heat for our built and industrial environment. New Mexico isn't just breaking bad—it's breaking energy records. Adopting geothermal power and cooling doesn't just supercharge energy efficiency; it completely rewrites the playbook for how business gets done. Want to build a data center? Here's why NM might be your Land of Enchantment: Within 5 km of the surface is 163 gigawatts of power potential. That's 15 times the installed power capacity of 2023. Want to make some magic happen on the policy front? Here are some ideas: If the New Mexican government implemented a geothermal energy goal of 5GW, it could create (in addition to 5GW of clean firm power): -2,000 construction jobs; -750 indirect and induced jobs; -and more than 125 operations and maintenance jobs. There more! Nearly all of New Mexico's subsurface meets the conditions to use low- to medium-geothermal temperatures for direct-use applications. Implementation would give industries like dairy processing, chemical production, and others the opportunity to use ubiquitous, abundant, underground energy—and help their bottom line. Locked away in the Earth's crust is a source of energy so large that it dwarfs all other sources we use today. Nuclear fission and fossil fuels combined don't come close to geothermal's 15,000,000 zettajoules of power. Take a closer look: The scale of geothermal is so huge that all known fossil fuel reserves make up less than a single dot in comparison. A great example is Chaves County and the world’s largest mozzarella factory that processes 6 million pounds of dairy a day. The subsurface has enough energy to meet all of the factory’s direct-use heating needs.
