The web is disappearing 🕳️ According to a Pew Research Center report, 26% of pages from 2013-2023 are no longer accessible. But that’s not the whole story. In a new study published in Internet Archive's book, VANISHING CULTURE, data scientists working with the Wayback Machine have found: 16% have been restored through the Wayback Machine. 56% are preserved before they disappear. Preservation is the remedy for cultural loss. 📚 Read VANISHING CULTURE free from the Internet Archive 📖 Download & read: archive.org/details/vanish… 🛒 Purchase in print: betterworldbooks.com/product/detail… #VanishingCulture #DigitalMemory #InternetArchive #BookTwitter

🍲 A recipe isn’t the whole story of a cookbook. The crossed-out ingredients, grease stains, penciled-in adjustments, and clippings tucked between the pages… that’s the history we lose when culture becomes just another online commodity to be served up, edited, or erased. Katie Livingston explores what happens when our cultural record is left to platforms built to serve content instead of preserve history. Now on the Future Knowledge podcast special #VanishingCulture series. 🎧 Listen & subscribe ⬇️ futureknowledge.transistor.fm/episodes/vanis…

☀️ Summers fade. Home movies help them live on. Time warp back to a 1958 backyard pool party where the whole family's having summer fun. 🏊‍♀️ 👙🩲 Moments like these weren't meant for history books, yet they speak to us across time. Preserved in the Prelinger Archives, this film follows the same family over ten years, from 1958 to 1968. Preserving home movies preserves the everyday lives that so often go undocumented and unnoticed. 🎞️ Watch the full film ⤵️ archive.org/details/200883… @footage #HomeMovies #FilmPreservation #PrelingerArchives

⚽🕹️ The first official World Cup computer game was a fiasco. WORLD CUP CARNIVAL: MEXICO '86 was little more than a lightly tweaked re-release of Artic Computing's World Cup Football, repackaged to cash in on the tournament & sold for more than 4× the original price. 💸 Its awfulness has been preserved for posterity in the Internet Archive's software collections ⤵️ archive.org/search?tab=all…

106 years ago today, Hollywood’s ultimate power couple, “America’s Sweetheart” and “Everybody’s Hero,” Mary Pickford & Douglas Fairbanks, arrived in the Soviet Union. Drawn by their admiration for Soviet cinema, they visited Moscow. At Mezhrapom Studios, Pickford planted a kiss on actor Igor Ilyinski. That playful moment inspired director Sergei Komarov’s feature "A Kiss for Mary Pickford," released in 1927. 🎬🌍 Check out this archive of Pickford and Fairbanks items ⤵️ archive.org/details/%40ias… #OTD #silentfilm #classichollywood #sovietcinema

📖 Family cookbooks aren’t just collections of recipes; they’re scrapbooks of daily living. Those handwritten notes, magazine clippings, and adjustments to favorite dishes...none of that survives when food culture is reduced to content on someone else’s platform. On the Future Knowledge podcast special #VanishingCulture series, Katie Livingston examines the importance of everyday artifacts. 🎧 Listen & subscribe ⬇️ futureknowledge.transistor.fm/episodes/vanis…
