All major technology systems are protected by math that will become obsolete in the near future. 🏚️ Much like a house with a failing foundation, current encryption standards have an expiration date, which explains the recent uptick in urgency across every industry to implement Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC). ⚙️ @Google, @Apple, @Microsoft, @Amazon, and dozens of other major technology providers have begun racing to upgrade their systems. Security teams are scrambling to inventory their cryptographic assets and federal agencies have migration mandates. 🛡️ The National Institute of Standards and Technology (@NIST) announced its first #PQC standards in August 2024 and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (@CISAgov) followed with implementation guidance. While historical trends are not as precise as the math referenced above, there is certainly a rhythm to major disruptions that historians have documented extensively. 🏛️ 🗓️ In 1997, researchers William Strauss and Neil Howe published The Fourth Turning, identifying an 80 to 100 year cycle in American history. Each cycle contains four phases, culminating in what they called a Crisis: a period when existing systems prove inadequate and new foundations must be built. 🇺🇸 The American Revolution in the 1770s and 1780s. The Civil War in the 1860s. The Great Depression and World War II in the 1930s and 1940s.
