Spiralling global temperatures (1850-2026) It is exactly 10 years since I first put this animated graphic of changes in global temperature online. #ClimateSpiral It instantly went viral. People watched it over and over again. It still offers the power to shock a decade on.

We found that disruptive tactics directed at targets perceived as undeserving were judged as immoral and unjust, provoked greater anger at activists, and reduced activist support compared to actions targeting entities seen as more responsible for the climate crisis.

After quite a bit of uncertainty about whether it would actually happen—largely due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East making travel difficult—I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be presenting (remotely) at the AFPP 2026 conference in Manchester next month.

Across two preregistered studies, we find: 🎯 The exact same disruptive tactic is judged very differently depending on the target of disruption. 🎯 Targeting “undeserving” entities → perceived as more immoral, unjust, and anger-inducing. 🎯 Leads to lower support for activists.

We found that support for radical climate activism is not well explained by existing models of collective action, nor by political ideology or outgroup hostility. Instead, it is most strongly associated with collective victimhood, as well as age and personality factors.

More than 50 heat records were broken across Australia in the last week of January, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. This is climate change, and it can be lethal.
