Adam Tow (@atow) is an incredible developer, photographer, and live stream producer. The entire band appreciates how well he captures LIVE near WWDC each year. This year Adam also produced our live stream. His post walks through all the technical details. Thank you Adam!

@jamesdempsey @HekesPekes Hmmm it works for me. Oh I think you must be looking at the diff navigator. It’s pretty bad. Just open it in the regular navigator. Press the opposite facing arrows, then you’ll have the option for side by side.

It’s disappointing that side-by-side diffs have not made it back to Xcode’s source control views. It bums me out that the user experience of GitHub on the web is more flexible than the native IDE, especially since the side-by-side diffs used to be there in Xcode. FB12400603

@edwardsanchez @HekesPekes Yes, but selecting it doesn’t actually change to a Side by Side view. It just stays Inline regardless of which option is selected. I am glad the *intent* for a Side By Side comparison was there. But in another way, it’s worse that it’s been broken for an entire year.

@gregheo I haven’t been out that way for a number of years now. I always found the ruins and the giant camera obscura to find that area a bit eerie. The Musée Mécanique used to be located there too adding to the vibe.

Stuck around the South Bay for WWDC week and only managed one cheeky trip up to SF right before my flight to make sure the coast was still there.

@jamesdempsey @HekesPekes Wait Xcode 15 still has side by side. It’s in the editor menu as an option - but the default is inline. I haven’t checked if it’s there in 16 still but I’d be surprised if they took it away.

@edwardsanchez @HekesPekes I remember the original attempts to integrate CVS into Xcode, so the current support doesn’t feel so bad to me at all. I was excited to see the Xcode 15 improvements until I discovered they removed side-by-side diff, rendering everything kinda useless for me.

@jamesdempsey The whole SCM story in Xcode is a very sad story. It mostly gets worse over time. And focus on wrong features nobody asked for like PR support instead of fixing the basics everybody needs.

@flyosity If you think about Obj-C as an answer to the question ‘what is the thinnest veneer that can be put on top of standard C to gain a powerful, dynamic, object-oriented runtime?’ it is incredibly simple and elegant. The quirky syntax is motivated by what standard C wasn’t using.

Objective-C is beautiful the way a mechanical watch is beautiful. It’s simple, elegant, and uses quirky syntax to scare you away The ➖ / ➕ to denote instance and class methods is literally gorgeous. You’re lying if you say it’s not There will be no Obj-C slander in this house
